    Garden / Yard List 2025

This morning had a few points of interest: • 2nd record of Rabbit. • 4 Starlings - that this is worthy of mention shows that they are getting rare here! • A brief, distant Lark, hopefully only Sky, as I still need Wood for the year. 😬 • And, finally #89 Green Woodpecker. A bird heard very...

Roseate Tern ? West London, United Kingdom

They say they ring pulli, so maybe bill colour is not developed at that age. There have been quite a few potential ‘longipennis’ Common Terns recorded in the U.K. over the last 20 years. None have been accepted, and maybe for good reason, if regular Common Tern can look like this.

Roseate Tern ? West London, United Kingdom

That is a curious bird! Definitely not a Roseate Tern. Possibly a ‘longipennis’ Common Tern, with that black bill and seemingly darker (than Common Tern) mantle. I wonder where such a creature picked up the colour ring? Was the code readable in the field?

    Garden / Yard List 2025

It’s an oddity, that I’ve only seen Grass Snake in the garden in odd years. 2019, 2021, 2023 and now 2025. 🐍 🤷🏻‍♂️ Until last week, I couldn’t get to this section of our millstream, due to the Fish Ladder work site. Very nice to see in the warmth of this afternoons sunshine. It reminded me...

    Garden / Yard List 2025

An early start proved successful, eventually. I thought I might be able to hear a Cuckoo coming from upriver, but traffic noise ultimately made it impossible to confirm. About 20 minutes later I could hear #87 Cuckoo calling from a little way downriver. Whether it was one or two birds i'll never...

    Garden / Yard List 2025

As has been the case lately, the mornings have not been conducive to getting out early. (rain or lethargy) This afternoon, I had a narrow window for a garden stroll. Happy to see a slight uptick in Butterflies, and today the first garden Dragonfly of the year - not surprisingly a Large Red...

    Iberian chiffchaff?? Uk

As said above, the 3-part song: ‘Chiff-Chiff-Chiff Wheet-wheet-wheet doodley-doodley-doo’ (at least to my ears) sounds good. The only thing is it could be Common Chiffchaff that has heard Iberian and is copying it, in which case it may revert to regular Chiffchaff song, or it is Iberian and...

Merlin Bird id app - Problems with long recordings

I tend to do it in shortish bursts, 5-10 minutes, otherwise it takes ages to load and check. I use it as a backup to my ears, so if I suspect am hearing something, I glance at it as a double-check. Of course it often doesn’t hear what I am hearing, and occasionally it does hear what I didn’t...

Eurasian Kestrels- Can and do they flycatch in the air?

I’ve seen them do it frequently, presumably connected to an abundance of suitable prey.

A singing Willow Warbler early yesterday morning was on the same date and near enough the same spot as one last year, makes you wonder if it’s even the same bird. This is my second this spring, and the first time I’ve had more than one at this season.

    Garden / Yard List 2025

An hour, this morning, in the garden, delivered very little, though I did think I might have heard a Curlew early on. Highlight was just getting onto a fast-disappearing Otter, porpoising up river. A Cetti’s Warbler sang just as I stepped off patch, and never sang again after I rushed back...

    British Birds Journal

It always used to come out, digitally, on the 1st of the month, but lately it comes when it comes and BB haven’t/don’t communicate with their subscribers. Personally, as a subscriber for 43 years, I find that poor treatment.

Man destroyed Peregrine eggs on St Albans Cathedral roof

Destroying Peregrine eggs is fairly expensive too.

    Garden / Yard List 2025

The (presumably) pair of Mistle Thrushes flew past the dining room window yesterday, they’ve become very sporadic recently, but they have bred just opposite us a few years ago, so may do so again. This morning I heard Redwing calling a few times early on, I guess it/they roosted in the garden...
