    Eyecup positions - a solution.

Very neat. Did a similar thing with my wife's Nikon EDG bins which simply would not stay at the fully extended position and would creep back in. Not quite as sophisticated a solution, but found a plastic water pipe of the correct diameter and cut a couple of pieces. It was black though, so at...

green or common sandpiper - Arcachon Basin

Agree absolutely that the more features the merrier. Just wasn't aware a long tail was a feature of Common Sandpipers. I'm guessing this individual is either in moult or is a youngster as it's tail doesn't seem to fit the expectation - pics were taken 3rd September.

green or common sandpiper - Arcachon Basin

To be fair I did wonder about the 'long tail' comment.

green or common sandpiper - Arcachon Basin

One further difference to add - Common Sandpiper almost always shows the white 'shoulder' between the wing and breast. Green Sandpiper doesn't.

First camera for birding- model, lens and shutter count

I would agree that for a beginner a bridge camera could be a very good choice. I would suggest you have a look at the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 IV. It has a really good feature set including a 24 - 600mm zoom lens, bird/animal detect AF and a really comprehensive list of options that can...

    OM1 mk 1. Firmware update

I've not tried to be honest - the OM WS app does 'see' the camera and downloads images and videos so may be able to save custom settings as you say. Might be something I'll try when I'm brave enough - as it happens my custom settings are not that complex (I only use C1 and C2), so doesn't take...

    OM1 mk 1. Firmware update

Thanks Chris - I think I had previously come across some discussion of problems with Mac and OM WS for updates and the associated risks which is why I defaulted to using the OL share app instead. I think I looked into it a bit when the 1.5 version firmware came out. Suffice to say I gave it up...

    OM1 mk 1. Firmware update

Yep, a message pops up in Workspace pointing to some sort of security setting conflict but for the life of me I can't find what needs to be enabled to resolve it. Not life threatening as OL Share gets the update done, just a bit of a faff to have to reconstruct the custom settings. First...

    OM1 mk 1. Firmware update

Time and date needed resetting on mine too. I've tried updating via Workspace a couple of times but for some reason my Macbook Pro won't connect because of some sort of security blockage. I'm not sure if the refusal is on the part of Workspace or Mac OS. It's odd because it does connect and can...

Whatever happened to this venerable optics company?

The Michael Woodford book is very good. Exposure - Michael Woodford

    OM1 mk 1. Firmware update

I did the update via OL share too. Like you, I lost the C1 and C2 settings (I don't use C3/4), as well as most other custom settings. Odd because after the update installed I was invited to re-install saved settings, which I believe I did. That said, I haven't specifically saved any settings...

Tree Pipit OR Meadow Pipit - Isle of Wight, England

Can I add another candidate into the discussion - this was taken on the salt marsh at Southport beach on May 31st. Meadow for me but I could be persuaded otherwise. Unfortunately I didn't catch the call or a view of the hind claws.

    Green vs Common Sandpiper

The white 'shoulder' (just in front of the folded wing) is usually a very good giveaway for Common Sandpiper, also if you see them take flight the Green Sandpiper has a white rump.

    Newbie-friendly birdwatching resources?

One app I have found very useful is the free Merlin Bird ID by The Cornell Lab. See here. In particular, the Sound ID function has been very impressive in my experience. It has been able to identify the calls of a great many birds often despite considerable other background noise and has helped...

Is the older Trinovid 8x20 still a decent binocular?

I thought about the Zeiss compacts as my main bins are Zeiss (in fact, I have three pairs). I had read though that the Zeiss compacts didn't seem to feel too well made so haven't looked any closer at them just yet. It would be good to be able to get the leading contenders all together for...
