Sea eagles attempt to nest in Orkney!

Wonderful news. My family have a home overlooking Hoy and it has always been a hope of mine that eagles would return to that stunning island. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-32181462

    Western Scotland birding

Try Glen Fyne for golden eagle. It's a nice walk if the weather's good and is fairly near where you're staying. Not much chance of sea eagle but you never know on the Clyde coast in winter, you could be very lucky! Stockiemuir lek is well worth it. For Scottish specialities, are there still...

    Manfretto Heads

I have the 701 HDV for my ES80 scope and it's great. Think you can buy new for about £70 now. Dave

    Loch Garten Ospreys 2011

Off sick today (genuinely!) so I'm watching the webcam expectantly. Looks like there are some crossbills tidying up for the ospreys' return!

    Grist to the Anti-raptor Mill

Hi EG, You clearly have a fair amount of experience of the eagles on Mull. I am genuinely interested in some of the things you have to say. I'm an amateur enthusiast and no expert. Is it really correct that human inprinting would still be expected on wt eagle several generations after the...

    Western Scotland birding

Loch Ardinning I was walking the dogs at Loch Ardinning near Strathblane today. Beautiful winter sunshine but bloomin cold! Birds of note: treecreeper, reed bunting, 2 male and 2 female goosander on the loch, flock of around 6 goldcrests, 4 to 5 bullfinches (at least 2 males), flock of...

    Mulepack

It has been said many time before but I have just spent a day with my new Mulepack from Cley Spy and it is absolutely terrific. It was posted to me almost immediately upon ordering. I was previously carrying my Opticron ES80 in my rucksack and hand carrying the aluminium tripod. This bit of...

    Nikon 10x35 EII

Nice idea Brock! Wonder how many wives I'll need for a top end scope?! Sancho - to be perfectly frank, there is very little I'll miss about Dubai. Perhaps the weather!

    Nikon 10x35 EII

Thanks to all for the advice. Sancho - they are fantastic. Cannot wait to get out and bird with them! Of course, when I returned to the store to ask to try them out properly, I instinctively insisted someone accompany me outside with the bins. I'm from Glasgow and only out here for another...

    Nikon 10x35 EII

That's me back from the store with a brand new pair. I'm officially a binoholic. Absolutely delighted with my purchase! Any advice on toughening them up so that they actually get used would be appreciated. Dave

    Nikon 10x35 EII

You know when you dream about bins that you've turned a corner. Oh dear. Anyway, I'm off to the store shortly to go for it! Here's my next question - how can I best protect them from the elements? I want to use these bins as often as possible but I'll be returning to Scotland again very soon...

    Porro or Roof

Hi Terry, In your price range the porro bins will seriously outperform the roofs optically. It's a trade off between ergonomics and view quality. I'm biased but I'd start off with a porro at this price range. See also the Leupold Yosemite (around £90 online). It gets rave reviews on here and...

Pretty unanimous so far! I'll sleep on it and let you know what happens..!

    Nikon 10x35 EII

Is a chance to purchase a brand new pair at a bargain price too good an opportunity to miss?! I've only had a look at them indoors at the store. Still seemed brilliant. My current bins are Hawke Frontier ED 8x43 and I love them but I could always have another pair...

    "Good-enough" cheap binoculars

The Yosemites are currently about £90 in the UK. Celestron Nature 8x30 at about £60 sound interesting. They appear to be very similar to the Yosemite build. There's a good review elsewhere on the forum. Opticron Aspheric WA 8x40 (around £60) also gets good reviews but is a little heavier.
