Born in West London in Oct 1948. Grew up in various rural locations as father was a soldier and we lived in various remote spots. This is where I developed my interest in birds. Educated in Army boarding school then joined Scientific Civil Service (MAFF). Worked as bacteriologist in field of fish diseases. Went to uni to study microbiology. Ended up studying as much Marine bio as Microbio. Lost 1/2 leg in road accident. Became teacher (specialised in Ecology) and stayed in the profession until 2008. Retired and went back to first loves of photography, rock-pooling and bird-watching. Try to combine bird-watching/photography with travelling. Have been all over including Australasia, Antarctica, N. America, S. America, (Ecuador, Galapagos,Uruguay, Argentina, Falklands), Canada, many European countries, Thailand, Africa (Gambia, Ethiopia, South Africa, Tanzania). I am not an expert in anything but love to experience new birds and new places and cultures. I am totally comfortable in admitting when I don't know and asking those who do. This is why I think that this is a really great site.
