unknown raptor in Golan Heights, Israel

Thanks everybody. I think you are quite right about the quality of the pictures, but my daughter only has a tourist type camera. Thanks again for your time and expertise.

unknown raptor in Golan Heights, Israel

My daughter saw this raptor soaring over the Golan Heights in her recent holiday. Any ideas? I birdwatch in England but don't see a lot of raptors.

The Birds of Durham - new county avifauna

I fully agree. My copy arrived in Nottingham yesterday, and I was very impressed indeed. Have no fears about the packaging. The £10 cost is not a rip-off, and the whole thing is extremely robust. It has clearly stood up well to the Post Office Penalty Shoot Out competition, and the book was in...

    Guinea Pigs, Notts

To be honest, I was told that it was a female by the same person who told me the circus story. It certainly was a huge animal, but I reckon that in those days, perhaps information might have been lacking about such an unusual beast. At the time, for example, I had never heard of the species. I...

    Guinea Pigs, Notts

There certainly used to be a Steller's Sealion in Cornwall. I saw it for the first time around 1988. I can't remember who told me , but I was given the story that somebody in England had ordered a sealion for their circus from a rather iffy dealer in California. The latter, not being a top...

    Guinea Pigs, Notts

Is the Steller's Sealion the female at the Brisons, or have there been others ?

Herring Gull, St.Ives, Cornwall, England, August

At the end of August, I watched this Herring Gull for about an hour at St.Ives, Cornwall, England. It seemed to be neither a juvenile nor an adult like the rest of the seaside scavengers it was with. The bird was extremely aggressive, and dominated all the others, including the adults. Its tail...

    Grunting/snorting sounds

What sort of noise can a muntjac make ? They have been seen very close to Nottingham city centre in recent years, for example. Might it have been one of these ?

    white shag in Cornwall, England

Thanks a lot for the input. Further research has revealed that there is another race of shag in the Mediterranean called "desmarestii" whose juveniles can be very pale indeed, if not whitish. Does anybody out there have experience of these birds ? Could one have wandered up to Cornwall ?

    white shag in Cornwall, England

I photographed this bird on Godrevy Island, north of Hayle, Cornwall, England in the last week or so of August this year. Why is it so white ? It stood out like a sore thumb from the rest

    falcon over Nottingham, England

This falcon was soaring for two or three minutes over our home in the suburbs of Nottingham, England. I thought that it was a Peregrine but it seemed to lack the contrasty black and white head pattern of that species, its head being instead just uniformly dark, something which is shown to some...

    mediterranean race shag ?

I found this bird at Rospletha Cliffs, near St.Levan in Cornwall England on August 21st. I thought it was the same size as the shags around it, but why is its breast so brilliant white ? Is it a mediterranean race shag, or is it just a cormorant...a relatively uncommon bird on these cliffs ?
