    first winter blackcap

Yes, he's been on and off the feeders all day so far today and he keeps chasing off the blue tits. He's now taken complete control of the sunflower hearts feeder and won't let any other bird on it, even though there's enough perches for four birds to feed at once. Are they normally this...

    first winter blackcap

Saw my first ever Blackcap in my garden this morning! I wasn't sure what it was at first so I've just had it confirmed by someone who knows more than I do. Here are a few photos I took of it.

    New bird in garden.

Thanks Colin. A blackcap is the other one I thought it might be, but I think it's puffed up because of the cold today so it looks quite a lot fatter than the pictures of blackcaps in my books. :t:

    New bird in garden.

I saw this bird in my garden in Hertfordshire this morning for the first time and I'm not sure what it is. I think it may be a Marsh Tit. Please could somebody confirm what it is. Sorry the photos aren't the sharpest ever, I need to get a new camera!

    Sparrowhawk attack!

I was watching tv this morning when I heard a something crash into the window. I thought it was a bird that had flown into it so I walked over to have a look half expecting a sparrow or something to be on the ground half knocked out, but when I looked out I saw this. A sparrowhawk with a poor...

    Help with bird identification.

Thanks for your replies. That's definitely a first for me then! Could a canary survive long in the wild in the UK, could it survive the winter?

    Help with bird identification.

I saw this bird in my garden today, but I'm not sure what it is. I thought at first it might be a Siskin but the tail is much lighter, very pale yellow, than any siskin I've seen before.

What's been in your garden today?

Today it's been very busy at the feeders, probably because of the frost and the bit of snow we've had. We've had 3 siskins, which appeared in the garden for the first time on Christmas eve, about a dozen goldfinches, 8 greenfinches, blue tits, great tits, starlings, blackbirds, house sparrows...

    Identification help please.

I'm in Colney Heath which is between Hatfield and St Albans. I've only got a small garden, about 40', but we get a better range of birds visiting the feeders here than we did when I lived in rural Suffolk several years ago. The other 2 new sightings in the garden this winter are a brambling and...

    Identification help please.

Now it's been confirmed I can add it to my list of birds I've seen in my garden, 3 new ones this winter already! Thanks for your prompt help. :t:

    Identification help please.

I saw this bird (the one in the photo with the arrow pointing at it) today on my nyger seed feeder with some goldfinches. I've never seen one before. I think it's a siskin but I'm not sure. Please could someone confirm this for me. Apologies for the slightly blurry picture. Thanks.

    Today at the feeder

I can't believe what's happening today. I've just seen another first in my garden, a great spotted woodpecker on the peanuts. I don't think I've ever had as many different birds in my garden in one day as today and it's only 11.00am!

    Today at the feeder

Looked out the window first thing this morning and saw a brambling feeding on the sunflower hearts. It's the first time I've ever seen one so another one to add to the list! :t: I managed to take a pic when it returned later.

    Birds suddenly eating more..

...and I thought I had a lot of hungry birds to feed! There must be many hundreds, if not thousands of people like us across the country, let alone the rest of the world, feeding this quantity of food on a regular basis. I wonder how many tons of peanuts and sunflower seeds our little feathered...

    Birds suddenly eating more..

I've noticed that since upgrading to the newer style RSPB feeders with the perching rings rather than the standard straight perches, the collared doves have worked out how to perch on them and feed directly from the feeder. On the straight type they could never manage to do that.
