A common visitor to the lake near my apartment and I finally managed to take a photo of one that I actually quite like! :-)

The first new lifer of the year - Common Redpoll!

On my first birding walk I managed to actually see a new lifer, a Common Redpoll! There was a small flock of around half a dozen or so near my apartment looking for food.

Common Firecrest, the "Summer Gold Chicken"

Managed to see this Common Firecrest in a conifer at a graveyard near my office today. I find their name in my native language of German rather amusing, as it translates to "Summer Gold Chicken" (Sommergoldhähnchen). Always a delight being able to spot one :-)

    Moorhen Relaxing

I love moorhens, their beaks are so colourful and quite unlike anything I've seen around here! It's a shame they're on the "nearly threatened" list here in Germany.

    New Lifer — Northern Wheatear!

A new nature reserve has been opened to the public near my office. It's a hill that used to be an old landfill but that has been rewilded over the past few years. A few weeks ago, it was opened to the public. I took a quick trip there today in what was way too hot weather: but it was worth it...

New lifer — European Honey Buzzard

It's not even blurred, I just had to crop it quite extremely. Hopefully next time I'll get a better photo!

New lifer — European Honey Buzzard

Managed to see two European Honey Buzzards flying over a cemetery during my lunch walk in Halle (Westf.), Germany today. It looked like a Common Buzzard or a Goshawk to me at first, but a birder friend of mine who had also seen a Honey Buzzard a few towns away confirmed it was a Honey Buzzard...

A new lifer for me — Common Sandpiper

Located right next to my apartment, there is what used to be an artificial lake. It has now been mostly drained and turned into a rainwater retention basin with a small stream flowing through the middle of it. It was at this former lake that I saw my very first Common Sandpiper today. I hadn't...
