I have finally got my wish!

I have finally got my long awaited Bird Hide in my garden, it has been built for me to use looking out over the fields behind, where we have many raptors, a huge contingent of Buzzards, Sparrowhawks, Kestrels and even Goshawks, on one occasion we even had a Peregrin Falcon sit on the fencing in...

    Sparrowhawk

Like the pic you managed to get, I think you may well see some funny antics from this one, I had one young male, who was so clumsy I knicknamed him bonkers, as he crashed into the bird table, crashlanded by my feet, and made a desparate attempt to land gracefully, but made a right pigs ear of...

    birding with a disability

I have got one of those, but I have just realised that we have the sticker on the door, but because my fridge freezer packed up a few weeks ago I had better find out where it is, or the medics will be none too chuffed with us, but I do put the current repeat list on the fridge door for both of...

What's Your Most Unusual Garden Bird?

Rare visitor for me! Tree Creeper, winding its way up the ash tree until it decided to fly across the road to the Greater Spotteds Nesting tree. Green Woodpecker is a regular visitor after the ants, GSW's ten a penny every day on the nut feeder in both back and front garden. Another rare...

    Tree sparrow in my garden

How Lucky is that? I haven't seen one of them since I was about 11 years old, a good few years ago now! Well done, and in your own garden. wish I had seen it.

    Dorset birding

Took mt friends to the Airport (Hurn) and got a sighting of a good group of redwings sitting all around the fields that surround the airport, I nearly missed them as I originally thought they were thrushes, until I thought thrushes don't have red underwings, what a dozy old fool I am becoming...

    Dorset birding

Beautiful Bearded Tits, I have yet to ever see them, heard but never seen so far! I have been noting the number of Buzzards in more densely built areas, and how many of them have white fronts! Most have a band of brown midway down their front, otherwise white breasted. Buzzards are often...

What raptors, other than Peregrines, kill pigeons?

I had the discovery of two neat piles of feathers in the garden, one most definately a Woodie, and that pile was directly under the feeders on a pole. (looked like the bird was plucked there and then taken away to be eaten) the other pile was Collared dove and the plucking took place about a...

    buzzards hunting crows

I have witnessed Buzzards harrassing both Crow and Jackdaw, this also looks like they are hunting them, I have never been absolutely certain of their intent, but then the crows do give my local buzzards a hard time, especially during pairing / mating, and then the buzzards do try to evict any...

Eagles die in suspected poisoning (BBC News)

Seems like the farmers there have felt they were being ignored and have taken revenge. How sad! There should have been more reassurance then this might have been avoided. Similar complaints around certain farms in my vicinity, though in general most have protected my local Goshawks and have been...

Would an otter take a Coot? Minsmere 24/01/08

I quite agree with you on that score, I love my Fox visits, as he is actually less harmful than a weasel, stoat or Mink. The poor old Magpie is often blamed for stripping a nest of young or eggs, but I know the stoat and weasel are more likely pest.

Would an otter take a Coot? Minsmere 24/01/08

To be honest I was terrified when we actually found the offender, it was in the food barn where we milled the corn and mixed the feed, I used to go in there alone at the age of ten, carry Corn, half cwt sacks, up a ladder into the mill. This Mink was found and shot by the only farmworker we had...

Would an otter take a Coot? Minsmere 24/01/08

I would have said that if it were a Mink then there would be real trouble as they come back time and again and kill indescriminately. I have seen 2,000 free range chicken wiped out overnight, every single one decapitated, the beast only took one left all the rest! If Otter was the culprit I...

    Wick (Christchurch Harbour, Dorset)

Just wondering about the lack of spotting Little Owls, they are rather difficult to spot as they have a great tendency to hunker down on a fence post and vanish into the gloom, generally ivy clad posts favoured. I get a reasonable bit of luck in spotting them, as I have discovered they can seem...
