Gibbons around Krabi or on Ko Phangan?

If you hear gibbons anywhere in Krabi, you can be pretty sure they're sitting in a cage singing. I lived in Ao Nang from '94 to '96 and that was the case back then. For gibbons to be on a small island like Ko Phangan means that no one throughout history has captured them. The size of the...

    RFI: Southern Thailand, August 2009

Phuket still offers some very, very nice birding opportunities. There are a variety of habitats and as development is running amuk, it seems to be concentrating the birds into smaller places... thus making them easier to fine. Phi Phi will have limited bird species, but if you're going there...

Wow, thanks for the wonderful info Hanno!

    Recent Khao Sok sightings

Ah, so you've seen one in the wild? Do you know what time of the year they would produce this 'lek'? I'm guessing I might be too late for this season. How big is the lek (diameter)?

    Recent Khao Sok sightings

Hi Hanno, Do you have any suggestions on how best to go about spotting the Argus? I'm thinking that we could walk around the jungle and look for areas where the male has scratched the ground. I hear that they make rather large circles on the ground. I'm not overly interested in sitting in a...

    Recent Khao Sok sightings

In addition to seeing wild elephants, gibbons, langurs, macaques and other animals, we were treated to seeing a lone White-crowned Hornbill and three Helmeted Hornbills in Khao Sok recently. As far as raptors, we saw Black-thighed Falconets, an Oriental Hobby, a couple of Wallace's Hawk-Eagles...

New Bird for Phuket - Orange-headed Thrush

Hey Marie, Sorry, I've only got an Olympus waterproof camera and even if I did get a photo, it would be very impressive. |;| I've got a wide variety of trees including fruit trees: Banana, Rose Apple and Coconut as well as several flowering trees. I really like my new place. I was living too...

New Bird for Phuket - Orange-headed Thrush

In addition to the Orange-headed Thrush (which I've seen for three days in a row), I've got a Forest Wagtail walking around in my yard as well as a family of Brown-throated Sunbirds, Stripe-throated Bulbuls, Spotted Doves, Asian Brown Flycatchers and others. There are at least six cute...

New Bird for Phuket - Orange-headed Thrush

I was treated to seeing an Orange-headed Thrush in my yard this afternoon. I ran go get my camera and a darn Oriental Magpie-Robin chased it away just as soon as I got it in focus! Still, it was a nice sighting and I don't think it's been seen here before... I could be wrong.

    Krabi and environs

That is, if you don't mind birds being baited to a hide by Yotin and his assistants using meal worms in order to increase your chance of seeing a Gurney's. Ethically, I find this very disturbing and you don't need to bait them to see them. I've seen them plenty of times without resorting to...

    Kiss Thai Muang goodbye

without the habitat, no birds. The construction workers with their slingshots (catapults) will surely take care of any birds that dare show up in the area now. :-C

    Wet season birding

It doesn't seem like rain affects the birding too much. They've still gotta eat. Ground species seem to come out and move around a lot after a rain, probably looking for worms and other tasty treats. I find strong wind to be a much bigger problem for birding than rain. Oh, and leeches suck. :-)

    Kiss Thai Muang goodbye

To be fair, I guess it sounds a lot like everywhere in the world... it's just that I'm here and I care about what little is left. Every little loss really hurts. I guess I'd better make it over to VN before it's all gone too, eh. :smoke:

    Kiss Thai Muang goodbye

As usual, Nature is taking another backseat to development. The wonderful birding marshland known as Thai Muang is being filled in to make room for yet another resort. Thai Muang is known as one of the easiest places to see Red-wattled Lapwings, River Lapwings, Gray-headed Lapwings, Oriental...

Finally, a new bird for my life list - Blue-breasted Quail

I saw two Blue-breasted Quail yesterday in the same area!!! Man, am I lucky or what! I was mountain biking again. These two were in a slightly different area, but I guess it could be the same birds. And, my riding partner saw them too. He didn't understand why I was so excited... the silly...
