Hi Ken, I think your pugs are all Brindled except the White-spotted. I am finding the only way with worn specimens is to gen det them. Angus, thanks for the Sloe Carpet - a lifer. That's 3 so far this year. The others were Muslin Moth, of which I've now had a few this year, and Lead-couloured...

Hi Ken, Good night. I have not yet had this year the species listed above in your quote. The best of my new ones last night were Birch Mocha and Water Carpet, which I missed out on last year! I also had the one in the photo below and I cannot pin it down yet so would be grateful for any help...

Hi Mike, I was up north in Newton-le-Willows (Warrington) at the weekend helping with new granddaughter and put out a 40W actinic Robinson on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights and managed to catch a few as follows: Flame Carpet (1,1,0) ** Small Pheonix (0,1,0) ** V-Pug (0,1,0) ** Muslin...

I suggest we start a May thread as we are nearly at the end of April. Mind you I shall be experiencing the delights of Romanian moths at the start of May and I still haven't found time to process last autumn's photos yet. Last spring produced Eyed Hawk and Willowherb Hawk plus lots of Dewick's...

Last Night's Moths (Thursday 19th April) The best night for April so far with 29 species including 5 new species for the year and all earlier than before with the best being the first Hawkmoth of the year, a Pine Hawkmoth. This is the earliest of any Hawkmoth here so far, the earliest before...

Hi all, If it's not a Pale Tussock what is it? Nearly all my 'New for Year' moths over the last 5 days are at least 10 days earlier than the last couple of years: Peppered Moth (14th May/11th April) Pale Prominent (1st May/16th April) Pale Tussock (5th May/16th April) Flame Shoulder (1st...

Hi Ken, Good to see you're getting some action. Your micro looks like Eriocrania subpurpurella to me. There's loads of them about at the moment. I'm not doing Bookham Common on Sunday due to our 4th grandchild arriving last Tuesday. Priorities you know! All the best Pete H

Hi Ken, Looks like an Epinotia immundana. I had one a couple of nights ago (see grotty photo). Last night was pretty mild here at 9.6C though there weren't many micros around(the previous 2 nights were 10.6C and 11.1C). Just an Ypsolopha ustella, a Twenty Plume Moth and a host of Eriocrania...

Hi Ken, Good to meet you the other night. It was a good meeting especially from the point of view of putting faces to names. Most of the Acleris ferrugag/notana turn out to be ferrugana here. Out of 70 last year only three were notana and the first of these was caught on 29th June. The others...

What macro lense do you use for Butterflies

Hi Lee, I always use a Canon 180mm macro, which on my EOS20D with its 1.6x frame gives a total of 288mm. This allows photos of all but the spookiest of butterflies and even these can be taken with some patience. The downside is that it is an expensive lens but it is well worth it. best of luck...

Hi Ken, Not a sniff here of any moths despite the usual conservatory lights. Didn't put the traps out as the forecast was -2C (2C at 18.00). It turned out to be +2.8C but with quite a ground frost (8.4C at 18.00). Spent the day yesterday dissecting July Coleophoras with two new species for me...
