    Plain-backed Pipit

That is a good list for 10 days! The Tambourine Dove would have been a lifer for me. Familiar experience with the pipits. Sometimes a species has eluded you for a long time and once you’ve seen it, it pops up every time.

    Extremadura, late May 2025

I think these two towns will allow you to visit quite a few worthwhile birding spots where you are likely find some of your targets. Note that the town of Merida itself has quite an interesting birding area, which also includes a nice walk along the river and across the old Roman bridge: Roman...

Ann and Roland Go Birding in North west Argentina. September 2022

Thanks for the extra info and the trip report. Great read! In spite of the rain you saw an amazing number of species and lifers! Good to hear about Sandpiper Birding and Giselle. I’ll keep that in mind for a possible visit to Entre Rios we might do during the last days of our trip.

Ann and Roland Go Birding in North west Argentina. September 2022

Thank you for your excellent trip report. I found it after we had already booked a trip for next February with Clark Expediciones, so it’s good to read your positive experience with them. We’re going with them for a week ( visiting Cachi, Los Cardones NP , Coronel Moldes…) and after that do a...

New to OM-1 and Oly 100-400 mm

When you have bird detection enabled on your OM-1 it will give you better results when you enable more, even all, focus points. The detection algorithm is perfectly able to pick out even small birds, when the eye is visible. The latest firmware has made it even better, I think.

    Holiday in Algarve

Perhaps this website is of some use:Algarve Birds & Birdwatching - bird watching day trips & tours in Portugal & the south western Iberian Peninsula - Introduction It’s been quite a few years, since I went out for a day with him, but he was really excellent.

October migration birding: Heligoland, Texel, Ouessant, ... ?

Texel, in fact, is 24 km long and some 9 at its widest. I agree with everything else that has been said about the wadden islands.

    Germany and Netherlands in mid-June?

My last few visits to the Oostvaardersplassen were a bit underwhelming, but it is still a fairly reliable place for a white-tailed eagle. Mostly scope views, though. Texel would certainly still be a rewarding place in June. Accommodation may be a little difficult at that time, so try to book in...

    Zuiko 100 - 400 vs 300

I have had the 300 F/4 for a number of years and, like you, needed a zoom for a South African safari trip. It performed well in that respect and I won’t hesitate to take it on such a trip again. However, when I don’t need the zoom I always choose the 300 ( sometimes coupled with the MC14...

Costa Rica first timers trip - help us plan!

I agree about the Waze app. Although I have used Maps.me in other countries, it let me down several times in Costa Rica. The only drawback of Waze is that you can use it offline while driving , but in order to do so you need to configure your route with an active internet connection beforehand.

    The Demise of Birding Software

I mostly use Bird Journal, entering my sightings in the field,( and I love it ) but every few weeks I export them to Scythebill, both as a backup and for the extensive report options. Beautiful software!

    Little Bustard in sharp decline

What is the main reason for this decline? Loss of habitat?
