    Birding in the mountains

Sangahyando, No canopy walks. Yeah, a hope this year is to do some camping up in the mountains, to be in the meadow above the tree line in the morning.

    Birding in the mountains

Exactly. All the way up, you can't see the canopy. I will have to make my way to the eastern side some this year. Most of our hikes are around Rainier. Bird watching is not the only reason I am up there, by any stretch! But I just feel stuck on the trail and wondering if I am missing...

    Birding in the mountains

Hello all! I do a lot of (day) hiking around the Cascades and Olympic ranges. I do not have much luck finding birds on these hikes. My best luck is sub alpine meadow areas. But along forested trails, even on quiet days during the week, I will see little and hear not much more. Do you have...

    10x42 binoculars

I am not too concerned about the weight of the 42mm lenses. I am 30, decently fit, so lugging around a few more ounces is fine with me. So, I guess my dilemma is is it worth something close to > twice the price for the EDG over the MGH. What a new problem in deciding on a pair of optics nobody...

    10x42 binoculars

I had never considered a 10x32 binocular before. I would not be able to try one; while that is true of the EDG 10x42, I have tried the MGH/Conquest in the same configuration. How is the exit pupil on a 10x32? Is it uncomfortable for somebody younger to easily use? My concern is early morning...

    10x42 binoculars

Hello, looking at getting something in the 10x power for shore birds, open terrain of mountain meadows, and raptors. I am leaning towards the Nikon MGH 10x42. I compared it with the Zeiss Conquest of the same power and enjoyed both, but the slightly wider FOV was nice. If I did not go one of...

    Monarch 8x30 HG Review

Cool, good to know. I appreciate the response. Doesn't help me pick, but makes it an easier decision!

    Monarch 8x30 HG Review

Can I assume you like it after getting some hours behind it out in the field? I might get another pair of binoculars, and if so am planning on getting a (water-proof) 10x42 to pair with my 8x30Eii. I tried the MGH 10x42 next to the Conquest; both felt good at the store - having a tough time...

    Pelican case for scope

Also would like to know! I have thought about getting one for my binoculars, since I fly somewhat often and don't want anything to happen to them... will be getting a scope soon and this is in the back of my mind.

New to scopes... advice on tripod (and scope)

Hello All! I have found a Gitzo GT1542t tripod with a Manfrotto 500 head for about $350. Is this a good deal? I do not have a scope yet. Going to get one! I am looking at getting an 80mm scope, leaning towards the Nikon Monarch or the Pentax PF-80. I have not had a chance to try anything out...

birding binoculars upgrade (8x42) in the $400-$700 range

Hello all. Thank you for all of the advice, namely to try out different pairs and see what feels. BigWok's generous offer to let me try out several of his glasses, different brands all in once place, was great. I have decided I will be getting some Nikon eii's, after loving how they felt. Down...

birding binoculars upgrade (8x42) in the $400-$700 range

So, I have a pair of porro-prisms currently, and like them. I have read the older threads on here, and it looks like companies only make roof prisms now? I found these two that this forum seems to talk about a lot: Nikon 8x32 E2 and Swarovski Habicht...

birding binoculars upgrade (8x42) in the $400-$700 range

Thank you for all of the quick responses! I see 8x30 binoculars before recommended a lot; is that something I should seriously consider? As I need before, weight isn't something I am too concerned about, and low light levels and cloudy skies are a constant here. I did like the Monarch 7s, so...
