Now I KNOW that it's Spring

And she's not joking 'cos she phoned to tell me. But here in Dover it was very nearly Springlike, albeit with a chilly wind. However, by the time I'd got home from sorting out mother, it was really quite glorious and I sat by the pond for a while.

Many Happy Returns of the day, Bill!

Happy birthday Bill, hope you had a good one. B (:

    You clever B

A very fleeting visit but I just had to share this observation with you. Ken was looking out as one of today's heavy downpours started and saw a honey bee fly from the fuchsia in the front garden up to a seed feeder hanging just above it. It flew through a port, sheltered inside till the rain...

    Can Slow-worms swim?

Hi Phil I saw a slow worm slide into my pond last year, there was a good covering of duck weed so I wondered if it didn't know the water was there. It swam, very quickly, to the shallows and exited a lot faster than it entered.

    Newt behaviour

I had some toad spawn in a shallow dish (a plastic "plant pot saucer") on the slabs by the pond. The spawn had developed and there were a lot of tadpoles growing and feeding well. One day they were there, the next they were gone. They hadn't been tipped out of the dish, they weren't hiding in...

    snow

It's not fair! All we had down here in Dover was a sprinkling which lasted an hour or so and then it rained. Bah humbug!

    lost

I had a panic as well! I don't look in as often as I would like to these days but I tried to yesterday and there was nothing!

    A few good birds

Just before the new year my sister took me over to the business park in Folkestone where she had seen waxwings the day before (they were visiting B&Q and saw a mob of twitchers so grabbed the bins from the car and went to find out what was going on). We went back to the tree they'd seen them in...

    Blackbird behaviour

I recieved this reply from the RSPB today. "Thank you for your email. The males and females will display like this before mating but the female would not normally carry anything. It is unlikely the female will be looking to nest at this time of year. Most new pairs are formed in late winter so...

    Blackbird behaviour

Thank you all for your comments. I wondered about it being a peace offering charlierocky but she looked pretty stroppy, more like Kit's domestic! I've asked mum to keep an eye out for a couple of days in case they repeat the episode and I'm back up there on Saturday so I'll watch again then...

    Blackbird behaviour

Hi all. I wonder if anyone can explain the blackbird behaviour I saw today please? I was at mother's and when I looked out into the garden I saw a male blackbird in the long grass, wings spread, ripping at something. It looked for all the world like a bird of prey with a kill. It released it's...

not a bird, but it does fly.

Hi all. Thanks for the article Brian, although, unless the one I saw was a juvenile I think the description of size was a bit exaggerated. Certainly bigger than a bumble bee but not quite a monster, it was spectacular though. I've not seen any reports that they are a threat to our bees although...

    Happy Birthday Rose (roosmum)

Thank you all for your good wishes o:) I had a lovely day, apart from watching the England rugby team's fiasco (even my Jonny 8-P couldn't carry them through yesterday's game). I drank lots of wine B (: and ate a vast amount of curry with Ken and the sons, yummy yummy! Not such a birdy day...

    Banking and Birds

Hi Brian, as a non car owner I spend quite a lot of time on busses and have had several good sightings over the years, the best one being my first view of a little egret. I was so excited I got off the bus at the next stop and walked back to make sure I'd seen what I thought I had! o:) As for...

    Frogspawn....

Hi all, long time no post! I do sneak in from time to time to keep more or less up to date. As some of you "oldies" know, I love my pond and all its' inhabitants so I thought I'd report that I have the first blob of frogwpawn of the season. This is definitely early, about ten days early I think...
