Soaring Raptor - Baluran National Park, East Java, Indonesia. 14 April 2025

Fairly certain this is a Changeable Hawk-eagle seen soaring over Bekol Savana. Mahalo ...

Terns - Bali Barat (aka West Bali) National Park, Bali, Indonesia.

Thanks and my apologies ... all were taken on 5 April 2025.

Bali Barat (West Bali) National Park, Bali, Indonesia

This pigeon/dove has me baffled. I suspect it may be a sub=adult? Photo on 5 April just outside of the park. Mahalo ....

Terns - Bali Barat (aka West Bali) National Park, Bali, Indonesia.

I hope posting multiple flight shots of terns isn't too obnoxious. I've numbered each conservatively, for example Tern1 01 and 02 are sequential shots of the same bird whereas the time elapsed between the Tern2, 3, and 4 shots, while I think they're of one bird, are great enough for uncertainty...

Wood Sandpiper Bali Barat (West Bali) National Park, Bali, Indonesia

5 April at man-made ponds (perhaps past aquaculture pens?) just outside of the park. Not being terribly familiar with old world shorebirds thought I'd ask for confirmation on my ID. Mahalo...

Plover near Bali Barat (West Bali) National Park, Bali, Indonesia.

These were shot on 5 April at some aquaculture ponds just outside of the park. I'm not sure why I didn't get any shots from the front of the bird, mea culpa. My best guess vacillates between Javan and Malaysian. Maholo...

    Zombitse, Madagascar, 21 Oct. 2024

Thanks! I'm less than enamored of the Helm Field Guide's treatment of the numerous 'little brown jobs'. In large part, I didn't think jery because the tail seems too long and the greenish yellow tints seem more common in thamnornis..

    Zombitse, Madagascar, 21 Oct. 2024

Hope someone can provide an ID of one that baffles me. My guess in Thamnornis?

Gull, Sonoma County, California, 25 Oct 2024

Agree with your first impression of young ring-billed gull.

    Stripe-throated Jery?

Just back from ~3 weeks in Madagascar and this shot was taken at the V.O.I.M.M.A. community reserve near Andasibe. I found some of the LBJs (little brown jobs) challenging and wasn't overly impressed with aspects of the Helm guide, Regardless, hoping to be able to resolve some of my...

    Madagascar in October '24

I too am planning an October trip to Madagascar. I'd hoped that I could fly from Tana to Mahjanga, Toliara, and Tolagnaro (all flights in country require a return to Tana) and rent a self drive car or 4x4 as needed. Preliminary searches say there aren't rental vehicles at these cities. Does...

Perched Raptor, Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Malaysia, 28 Sept. '23

Thanks to all! During our 3 days on the Kinatabagan River in Sabah we saw several adult and immature W-BSEs. This one from the back side fooled me.

Perched Raptor, Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Malaysia, 28 Sept. '23

Hoping for help with this back view of a raptor I'm having trouble with. Uncertain whether the tail:wings ratio and the whitish wing coverts (shoulders) are diagnostic or just more variable noise. Thanks...

    Sunbird - Sepilok, Sabah, Malaysia

A couple of off angle shots of what I think is a red-throated sunbird but could be a brown-throated? I lean toward the former given the separation of the iridescent and nonstructural colored feathers on the back better matches the illustration in Phillips and Phillips. 22 Sept. '23 at...
