    Vulture in Gambia

Thanks, Can I ask, what is it about the second pictures that confirms to you EGV.

    Vulture in Gambia

My bird ID skills are not up to much as it is, even less so with Vultures as I have no experience of them. This bird stood out amongst the kites and Hooded Vultures so I got a couple of pics, checked my field guide, couldn't decide between EGV or WBV and maybe talked myself into EGV :-O. Here's...

    Vulture in Gambia

Thanks, I also considered White-backed Vulture but was hoping for Griffon Vulture ;) Looking at the field guide again, is the tail too long for Griffon Vulture.

    Vulture in Gambia

I saw this vulture being mobbed by a couple of Black Kites, I think it's a European Griffon Vulture but as my field guide says they are uncommon I would like conformation. Picture was taken in Kololi, Gambia on 06/12/11

How to improve this photo ?

I like the photo, but my eyes are drawn to the large patch of bare soil in the right fore ground. I think desaturating the grass a bit would improve it for me.

Not too far for you to travel for the Lesser spotted woodpecker. http://www.wrg.co.uk/moore_sightings.php Although it's managed to avoid me. ;)

Strangest ways you have had a lifer

The strangest way I’ve had a lifer and how I became interested in birds is the same story. A few years ago I got the chance of a very cheap holiday to Orlando. We had been before with the kids, but this was just for my wife and me. A couple of weeks before we were due to go I started to...

    Pic for Review

Try winding the zoom in a bit to 400mm. I've never used the lens you have but I did once have a Sigma 170-500 and that was much better at 400 than 500. Set your camera on a tripod and take some photos of something like a breakfast cereal box at 400mm, f8 and check those for sharpness. Some...

    Pic for Review

I would set your camera to Aperture Priority (AE), then as Cristian suggested select f8 & iso400, the camera will now select the correct shutter speed. You can then raise the iso until you have a fast enough ss (as Jaff suggested 1000) Don't worry too much about high iso numbers as grain is...

Greenfinches - where have they all gone?

I've also had far fewer chaffinches and greenfinches in my garden this year, although the goldfinch numbers are about the same as usual. I was hoping the cold weather would bring in something less common, but nothing until the snow melted when 3 fieldfares spend two days clearing my pyracantha...
