    Kite Optics Lynx HD+

Agree wholeheartedly. I've had a review sample of the 8x42s for a couple of weeks and while initial impressions were good, after using them in the field in various conditions I've been decidedly underwhelmed. The original Kite HD is a great little binocular where everything seems to "click"...

    Universal adaptor for smartphone

The Novagrade Universal Adapter works with pretty much any phone and scope combination, is small, reasonably light but robust and well made. Certainly worth a look.

Which Spotting Scope Adaptor for Note 8 Smartphone ... ?

I've had good results using the Navagrade universal adapter to attach various phones to a variety of different scopes... it's a very versatile and compact and robust adapter. Worth a look. Also have had good results with the Snapzoom adapter through binoculars... you can also use it with a...

    Advice > Which Scope/Tripod .....

As a travel setup I use a combination of the Hawke Endurance 50mm 12-36x spotter -- which is a great little performer -- and a Vanguard VEO2 265CB travel tripod, which folds small and is carbon fibre, so super lightweight (but also available as an aluminium model, which is cheaper). If you want...

    Vanguard Endeavour ED IV?

Definitely faulty Daniel, I get no such "softness" and "stiffening" with the focus wheel on the 10x42 EDIV. The focus is firm, smooth and accurate throughout its range. I'd send them back and insist on a replacement if I were you.

    Vanguard Endeavour ED IV?

I have the 8x42 EDII and the 10x42 EDIV, both fine binoculars, but of the two I'd pick the EDIV (that's assuming my 10x42 SLC HD was out of reach at the time ;-)). To some extent that could be down to a personal leaning towards 10x binooculars, but I think there's a bit more to it than that...

    Vanguard Endeavour ED IV?

Still not very scientific... but shining a light source through the objective, and moving a piece of plain white card back and forth at the eyepiece until the circle of light on the card is at its smallest and brightest gives a very crude measurement (bendy plastic coated wire and a ruler) of...

    Vanguard Endeavour ED IV?

Oops... I should have realised that. My mistake. No micrometer handy, and no real way to properly measure these things. I review optics based on using them in the field, not measuring optical, physical and mechanical characteristics in the lab. I'm not really trying to verify whether the...

    Vanguard Endeavour ED IV?

No, I didn't measure it -- that's the number quoted on the box (for some reason they've stopped showing eye-relief on the website specs). I don't really have the measurement gear to hand to measure accurately, but a quick and dirty approximation using a length of plastic coated wire-fastener...

    Vanguard Endeavour ED IV?

Review posted Hi all... I posted my review of the EDIV to the Ireland's Wildlife site last night. I'm not going to post a link here -- had my wrist slapped / login blocked in the past for sharing even relevant on-topic links to my own site *sigh* -- but you should have no trouble finding it if...

    Vanguard Endeavour ED IV?

As far as I know (and I think it was mentioned somewhere earlier in this thread) early samples of the EDIV started appearing in March, but they were recalled by Vanguard and not officially launched until August / September. I've seen no reviews of these early samples, or what was wrong with...

    Vanguard Endeavour ED IV?

The Vanguard is a better binocular hands down. Not that there's much wrong with the Eschenbach -- optically they're very capable, but I was never thrilled with the ergonomics of the odd shaped barrels. I prefer the image through the Vanguards, and in terms of carrying and using them in the...

    Vanguard Endeavour ED IV?

Yes, sorry Bob... should have mentioned that. Of course the dioptre being incorporated into the central body / top hinge is one of the bigger differences (along with the new prisms) -- the knurled dial is lockable, you click it out to adjust it and then click it back in to lock it into position.

    Vanguard Endeavour ED IV?

Eeek... don't let my wife see that photo or she'll be getting me to power-wash the patio outside my office!

    Vanguard Endeavour ED IV?

There was a lot going on with the marketing team as I recall -- guess I just pestered them at the right time ;). That email from Ian stating that there are no dielectric coatings on any of Vanguard's prism systems was from the 17 October. I'd say it's still evolution more than design...
