The Himalayas are the highest mountain chain in the world, rising up to more than 8000 m. It separates the Indian Subcontinent from the Tibetian plateau. To the south it is covered in monsoon rainforest and drier forest on the inner 'rain shadow' ranges. To the north the valleys are very dry and even desert-like.
Bird life varies with altitude and climate and is generally rich.
