Family: Apterygidae
Description
Kiwis from New Zealand.
A very distinctive group of ratites. They have hair-like feathers, a long and slightly decurved bill and are flightless. They are mainly nocturnal. At least one member of this group has a bill-tip organ.
Taxonomy
Apterygidae is a monotypic family in the order Apterygiformes.
It was formerly included in the order Struthioniformes.
