Identification

19–20 cm (7½-7¾ in)

  • Black upper-parts with white barring

  • Crown
  • Brown forehead
  • Yellow centre
  • Red at rear

Female

  • Yellow crown
  • Black moustache
  • Deep pink vent

Distribution

Asia: found in northern Baluchistan and western Himalayas (north-eastern Afghanistan to northern India and central Nepal).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].
Subspecies D. a. incognitus is not recognised by all authorities and D. a.conoveri is generally considered to be invalid[2].
Placed in genus Dendrocoptes by Gill and Donsker.

Habitat

Mixed forests and montanes.

Behaviour

Breeding

It nests in cavities.
