Identification
15·5–16·5 cm
Should always have white around legs, where Patagonian Sierra-Finch has yellow.
Distribution
Chile and southernmost Argentina. Southern populations are migratory.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Three subspecies are recognized[1]:
- P. g. gayi:
- Andes of northern Chile (Coquimbo to Colchagua)
- P. g. minor:
- Coastal Chile (Atacama to Santiago)
- P. g. caniceps:
- Southern Chile and Argentina to Tierra del Fuego
Habitat
In central Chile found in subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, as well as high altitude open areas. In southernmost Chile and Argentina mainly in open areas.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists mainly of seeds and some invertebrates. They are thought to eat fruit at times as well.
