Description

Darwin�s Rhea (Lesser Rhea) Pterocnemia pennata RANGE South America in south-eastern Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and north-western Argentina in southern parts of Argentina and Chile. Resident.

HABITAT Found in more upland areas than Greater Rhea, in the scrubland of the Puna zone. Recorded up to 5,000m.

IDENTIFICATION Ostrich-like bird, resembles Greater Rhea but much smaller. Plumage greyish-brown flecked with white.

HEIGHT 90cm, female shorter.

SUBSPECIES Nominate race is found in southern Argentina and southern Chile, northern birds are placed in tarapacensis (Puna Rhea) in northern Chile and garleppi in remainder of range.
