Identification
17cm (6¾ in).
- Pale grey forehead grading into blackish-tinged grey crown
- Whitish eyering
- Dark rufous-brown upperparrts, side of neck rufous-chestnut
- Whitish chin
- Rufous throat
- Rufous-brown breast, flanks and vent
- Greyish belly with whitish centre
Sexes similar. Juveniles have a white throat, a black breast, the rest of the plumage is dark, finely barred with buff.
Distribution
Endemic to the eastern slopes of the Andes of northern Peru (Amazonas to easter La Libertad).
Fairly common in its restricted range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Forms a superspecies with Red-and-white Antpitta, Bay Antpitta, White-bellied Antpitta and Yellow-breasted Antpitta.
Habitat
Humid montane forest.
Occurs at 1700-2750 m, most common above 2150 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on insects and small seeds.
Forages on the ground.
Breeding
No information.
Movements
Presumably a sedentary species.
