Least Sandpiper? Today at Medmerry RSPB, West Sussex, UK (1 Viewer)

Evan Atkinson

Always finding a way to go off topic...
United Kingdom
I was finally somewhat in the area to go and have a look at the Least Sandpiper that's been in West Sussex for a week or so now. I was told it hadn't been seen for 15 mins and I did see a smaller looking sandpiper that I did think looked like the least. I could not get a detailed look at it due to the wind and the distance. Some friends are saying that the left hand bird in this picture is the Least Sandpiper. This is the best pic I have of it and it stayed asleep the entire time I was there basically. The bird is directly below the bank below the coot, left of the dunlin. It certainly seems like it might be the Least but I'm apprehensive.View attachment 3K7A3877.JPG

Kind regards

Definitely not Least S.
Because...? It's been hanging out with a single dunlin, it's obviously smaller than the dunlin... the bird was in the shade the entire time so the leg colour was always going to be darker than what it should be. I'm not happy with the views of the bird anyway so I'll happily go back and actually see it, I'm just curious as to whether I had accidentally photographed it or not.

I see a dark-legged stint of the size of a Dunlin. Or may be I don't see the right bird on the image ?

The true leg colour is not always apparent V, have a look at this other thread and the link therein:

It is a totally different bird, isn't ?

My comment is it's one of the least least sandpiper-like least sand I've seen. I'd probably have overlooked it. For example, the other series showed its legs often show almost any colour apart from yellow. On the other hand none of the images look right for the other common stints

Yeah I did think it seemed off for a dunlin but I was also not confident it was the Least. As you say I couldn't pick out the leg colour too well because of where it was, it was completely in the shadow.
