I am into photography for some 20 years. During this time I owned different cameras and lenses. I tried macro, infrared, underwater, panoramic gear, but I never had a lens with focal length sufficient to do bird photography. That was a big money decision, and there was always "what if I am not going to like it?". As a trade off I decided to buy compact camera with amazing zoom capacity valued less than a lens. Moreover, I thought that a second hand option will provide me with everything I want and I can also enjoy some savings.
This camera opened up the whole world, for me, the world I never experienced before. I ended up falling in love with birdwatching and became addicted with this awesome hobby, which is not only about pressing the button, but also takes a lot of patience and requires long distance walking (read contributes to my healthy lifestyle).
Canon G3X produces vibrant images on low ISO settings, focus always catches the target, zoom range is simply unbeatable for it's compact size and light weight. If you are an amateur photographer and would like to beat the quality of images this camera takes you will have to be prepared to fork out some 4-5 times more money.
Ability to recall custom settings with the turn of the dial is also a massive plus for switching between flight and regular bird shots.
Of course, there are no pros without the cons and I discovered the following downsides:
despite advertised high ISO speeds up to 12800 I can't hardly deem acceptable photo quality taken at ISO speeds of 2000+. Picture of the night sky taken at maximum ISO will look like milky way even without a single star. As a result of this limitation I never used this camera ~30 minutes before the sunset.
The second limitation is rather financial, as under Australian sun during the day it is very hard to see things on a screen without the view finder, which comes as an extra. But I loved this camera so much, and invested into it, which complemented this camera even more. I highly recommend having EVF with G3X, as it will make your life easy and quality of your images more consistent, because you will be able to see what's going on on a little contrast digital screen.
Average AF speeds and low highest shutter speed prevent taking flight images of some fast flying birds, but are sufficient to take decent flight shots of a large birds.
Although, this camera has got some limitations if compared with the full frame large and heavy equipment. But it has a larger sensor size if compared with Canon SH-60 and despite less zooming ability the quality of the end picture is better on G3X. It has some pretty cool options, which in passionate hands will bring tons of positive emotions and satisfaction. :t:
15 years ago digital cameras were 2MPX and for the same cost produced images nowhere near as good as this one.
