Immediately upon playing with the prototype of this iphone app from Rare Bird Alert on Scilly in October 2011 it was clear that accessing rarity news has just shifted up another gear. Now having the newly launched app on my iphone is proving to be great fun. It is available in a Lite version as part of a pager subscription or separately as a full version. The access to rarity news for the whole UK or within a distance of one's location is handy. The rapid access to superb rarity photos are a bonus and look superb on an iphone. The ability to check the link to a map for that obscure nature reserve or to see how long the next car journey might be is already proving to be handy when planning a twitch. The opportunity to look at the rarity news from around the UK means that at the swipe of a finger there is much to browse. For any gadget-minded modern birder there is hours of fun in this. Bird Alert Pro in the lite version is very useful as a free back up to a pager subscription for those us who already live with constant access to rarity news. Although pager signals are the best way to get news, if one only wants to use a mobile phone then get an iphone and subscribe to the full version of the RBA Bird Alert Pro phone app. Highly recommended.
