the nikon 300f4 af-s paired with the nikon tc14ii has been my main lens for close quarter birds and butterfly/dragonfly photography for the last two years.
i use it with either my d7100 or d7000 and have been extremely satisfied with its results.
sharpness is great even with the tc14ii and it seems to be as sharp as a macro lens when good technique is applied. so good, in fact i can crop the blazes out of an image and still get a decent, useable result.
close up performance is surprisingly good for butterflys and dragonflys enabling me to fill the frame with the average uk species from 5 or 6 feet away.
