    Hi Missy, It has to be a House Finch, Cassin's wouldn't breed at Denver's lower elevation. They usually nest in conifiers above 8000ft, such as Rock Mtn. Nat. Park, where they are fairly common. And Purples are only in Colorado (rarely) in winter. Van

    True white-wingeds have three outer tail feathers that are white, other junco only have two. White-winged are a lighter gray than Slate-colored. I seen many of both species in winter here in So. Colorado. I'm not sure of any recored east of the Blackhills, but who knows. I've always believed...

    I think it is a sage, the gray on head look good and breast spotting too. habitat is right on. Probably a juvenile molting to adult summer plumage. Van

    FYI, The spot on a Am. Tree Sparrows breast can be missing while molting. I was an activer bander and have banded well over 1000 tree sparrows here in Colorado.

    If it was near water, possibly a solitary sandpiper or in a thicket a woodcock. Both have similar calls. But can't think of any small birds in trees making a reed sound of the cuff. Van

    Ram, FYI. This bird is a Cassin's Kingbird. Westerns are not have that dark on the neck and breast (lighter grayish in these areas), are not as yellow as this bird and have white outer tail feathers. Just thought you'd like to know. Beautiful shot of one in flight. See my gallery, there...

    Two of the Arizona, Grand Canyon releases showed up at Mesa Verde, and even "walked into the visitor center". There have been reports of Condors tracking into Wyoming. So, you probably had one of the introducees. Van
