Leupold whisperers here? Question on the BX-2 Alpine HD line

A poster to the general forum posted a question of " which of these should I buy" One of the binos was the Leupold BX-2 Alpine-HD. While reviewing the specs on the leupold site, 2 things struck me- 3 of the four of the line are stated as having "AK" prisms. The price factor to a limited...

Nikon EII general question- Zeiss or B&L framed bino?

Since I have never had one in my hands, can someone enlighten me as to the design construction- are the prisms on a detachable tray as in Bausch and Lomb (American pattern) frames or is it a Zeiss frame with the prism dropped into slots milled in the bino frame a la German pattern binos. With...

question about the Nippon Kogaku Novar line of the 50's

Hello, I ran across a 7x35 Nippon Kogaku Tokyo ser#812356 for a reasonable price on Ebay, shown as a "wide" (right prism plate engraved). Does anyone have any info on the Bino? There's no JB, but there is JE10on the left side axle lug. It is indeed a wide angle as, the FOV compares well with...

compact roofs and dielectric coating- not needed?

Forgive my ignorance in the small roof binos category, but the use of dielectric coatings does not seem to be common on compact roof binos. Is there a reason for that or simply economics? Regards, Pat

how important is resale value in the purchase of a binocular to you?

Seeing as I typically buy used vintage porros simply to discover the nuances of the designs, resale value for me is of low import. If you buy a bino, is the resale value paramount or a lesser consideration- if at all. Thanks, Pat

    rubber objective bumper covers?

Anyone know of a source for rubber rings that would fit over the aluminum objective ring (AKA beauty rings) covers on a porro bino that would give the "front end" some safety from scratches/dings? Just curious as I seem to recall a European source but came up with nothing currently available...

binocular objective lens caps (covers) question

Is there a proper name for a lens cap that engages the inside of the objective tube as opposed to the more common cover that slips over the exterior portion of the tube? Searches typically show the more conventional exterior cover (cap) but not the other. I've tried "snap-in" and got nowhere. I...

blackouts at AFOV of greater than 60 degrees- why

Hello; There a poster on cloudy nights forums/ binoculars that hs a problem selecting binos- he has optical blackouts with multiple binoculars *(typically with the eyecups extended full height) that apparently only happen in binos that have a wider AFOV than 60 degrees. Not having experienced...

nikon porros- any have plastic eyepiece arms?

It came up on cloudy nights bino forums and I'd like to know if the statement is accurate. I can understand the plastic objective tubes or prism plates, but after a bit of experience with Chinese low end porros with plastic arms, I shudder at the thought of such thing happening to a Nikon...

    Swift Audubon HR/5 question

I noticed that the HR/5 version has what looks to be a unique arrangement - it has prisms trays/plates (as in a B&L frame), yet the grub screw that adjust the trays are external, similar to what is used on a Zeiss framed bino. But there a twist to the arrangement, the screw bear on the plates at...

roof binos - diopter adjust schemes- one better/ more durable than the other?

I'm not that familiar with roof prism binos, having only had 4 in my hands over the past 20 years or so (porro fan!). The latest bino purchased is a bushnell legent ultra HD (8x42) that has a click out diopter adjust ring turn to adjust the diopter, then push back down to lock the diopter. Seems...

meade canyonview binos- metal or composite frames?

I've checked online and nowhere does it mention whether the body (frame) is made of alum/mag or thermoplastic. Considering the price point, I'm guessing they are plastic. Anyone know for certain? Thanks, Pat

When a mail order bino goes back to the retailer- where does it go after that?

As a virtual babe in the wood when it comes to online purchases of new bino's- I never had to return one, Is there a standard policy (likely depending on the particular country the mail order business operates within) or is there a fuzzy meaning as to what constitutes a "new" binocular. I see...

any companies state degrees of focuser wheel rotation- close focus to infinity?

Just curious as a poster on another discussion board ( cloudy nights) returned some maven 15x56 because the focuser was too fast for his liking. Are there any companies that state such a specification in a data sheet for all their products? Thanks and regards, Pat

Japanese binoculars of the 70-80's with A/K prisms?

I am aware of one specific Japanese binocular with Abbe-Koenig prisms that was made for Tasco in the #490R model 8x56 (6deg) in 1976. Is anyone aware of others? Further, does anyone have "eyeball time" with the Tasco? Given that early AK's don't have the dielectric coatings that the SP prisms...
