    Shiney Cowbird(like) with yellow eyes

Hi I've been sitting in Bournemouth Central gardens looking at the aviary, and there is a bird that I do not know, and although there is a notice with photographs of the 'inmates' there is not a pic of this one. Basically it is around the size of a mynah bird maybe a little smaller, a glossy...

    Violent bird courtships

Seeing as I have hijacked the thread on Mallards Feet into one on Mallards Privates, maybe I should start my own on violent mating behaviour in birds. Mallards seem, from what has been posted so far, quite violent birds, avian rapists nonetheless. Any other birds have violent courtships? Not...

    Rats on Mum's new birdtable!!

Mum has just been given a bird-table for Christmas - only thing is she went out this morning and a rat was sitting on it. She chased it off, but she is worried as she's never had rats before, apart from the odd one. There are actually quite a few rats around from what she has said...

Birds eating out of your hand

My neighbour with the bird table says that the local robin comes very, very close to her when she putting food on the table. I mentioned that sometimes robins can take from the hand, and possibly other birds. Just want some ideas on how to attact them to do this, although some may disagree...

Squirrel Master Feeders - any good?

I'm looking at buying my neighbour who has the bird table in the garden a Squirrel Master feeder - or possibly a Nuttery one. The SquirrelMaster has what looks like steel with holes like a colander, as opposed to the normal wire mesh found on most feeders. Only problem I can see is that it has...

    Home-made mealworms

Could anyone give me an idea of how to cultivate our own mealworms? Was watching something on TV about compost and mealworms last night (River cottage fishing) and am interested in 'growing' our own! Neighbour of mine is interested too. If anyone has any ideas, I'd be most grateful. Cheers

    Foxes and pork!!

Hi Just a quick question about feeding foxes pork. I have recently read information about feeding foxes, and this info was from a fox welfare organisation. Apparently pork can give them the runs and possibly lead to death. Now I, along with lots of others around my block have put out scraps...
