    Dartfords about anywhere?

Hi all. I'm coming down to Surrey from Cumbria for a few days next week, and was wondering if there any chance of making contact with a Dartford Warbler? I'll be staying in Woking. Any help gratefully received - thanks in advance. Steve.

    Moth ID please, Cumbria UK

Don't know what this is, but it was feeding on my Valerian plants after dark this evening, hovering around rather like a Hummingbird Hawk Moth, only a bit smaller. Anyone ID it for me?

    UK gull ID please

Saw this last weekend at Silloth, along with about a dozen or so Herring gulls. I 'think' its a GBB, but its no bigger that the herring gulls. Also, the lack of white spots on the wing tips, and the 'stripy' tail have me confused (as usual). Confirmation would be appreciated - thanks :t:

    UK - Skua?

Terrible photos, but wondered if anyone can confirm what Skua this is please? Seen last week in Portree harbour, Skye. Thanks, Steve.

Poor photo quality, but hopefully adequate to confirm one way or the other?

    UK - ferruginous duck?

Dreadful photo I'm afraid...but it was a VERY long way off. So, much as I would like this to be one, if it isn't, I'm sure you'll be able to point out several reasons why it can't be. Whatever the outcome...thanks, Steve.

    Silver/white wasps on Himalayan Balsam

Saw lots of these yesterday evening, beside the River Eden, at Lazonby in Cumbria. A bit of on-line research suggests that these are simply 'normal' wasps, but covered in white pollen. Seems highly unlikely to me, but I stand to be corrected, and if anyone can shed some light on them, then it...

Anyone know how to take photos of bats?

In the dark I mean...whilst flying. I've had a few attempts, and have got one or two photos that are getting there, but are still a long way from what I really want (as shown below) These were taken with a Nikon D80, Sigma 18-50 lens manually focussed at about 1m, and with the built-in flash...

Best way to see Mull in a day?

My wife and I, plus 2 non-birding friends, are staying a few miles south of Fort William for 5 nights in mid September. I quite fancy a day out on Mull, and am looking for some advice on the best way to handle it. Obviously, we could simply jump in the car and do the best we can, but I am also...

Anyone using the Swaro Universal Adapter?

I'm considering changing my DCB-A for the new UA, and would appreciate any input from anyone that's tried it. Reasoning is as follows: Last night I found myself in a hide with my DSLR, wide-angle lens, and ATS80HD scope, and wanting to take a photo. Out of necessity, I had to simply hold the...

    UK - Sparrowhawk...or a Goss?

90% sure its a Sparrowhawk, but I would appreciate confirmation please, as there are also Goshawks in the area. Sorry about the naff photos, but it was circling about 1300 feet above me!

    Moth for ID please

Sorry the pics are rubbish, but I'm sure they are adequate for someone to ID it for me. Smallish, maybe 1" across; Seen in grass between mixed woodland and lake edge near Bassenthwaite in Cumbria. Thanks in advance :t:

Yellow Wagtail with grey head, UK

Don't know if the photos are good enough for a positive ID, but any help with this one would be appreciated. Seen on Sunday at Seahouses, Northumberland.

How to lighten, without blowing highlights

Hi all. Looking for some advice please, re the problem of lightening a photo, whilst retaining detail in the highlights. The two pics below are a typical example. Conditions when taken were overcast and grey, with light rain. The first one is straight from the camera, apart from cropping and...

New to Dragonflies - need an ID please

Hi all. Today was my first attempt at photographing some dragonflies. I'm actually quite happy with some of the photos, but am unsure of the ID for one of them, the first four are (I think): 1) Large Red Damselfly 2) Broad Bodied Chaser (male) 3) Broad Bodied Chaser (female) 4) Four Spotted...

    UK gull ID please

Been going through the weekend's photos, and this one stands out as different from the others. The beak seems to be yellow with a rough black band. Can anyone confirm what it is please? Apart from cropping, the pics are untouched. I know almost nothing about gulls, so whatever you say, I'll be...

Confirmation of two UK IDs please

Evening all. I'm pretty sure the first one is a Common Sandpiper, but I'd appreciate confirmation please. The second/third one is obviously a Wagtail, but is it Pied or White? The grey back suggests to me that its a White, but again, confirmation would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve.

    Another UK LBJ

First off, apologies for the rubbish picture, but it was 40yds away, and the light was going - well that's my excuse anyway ;) Spotted amongst a flock of about 50 Pied Wagtails, on a part-flooded field, N. Lancs this afternoon. So, what have we got? I reckon its a Pipit, and going by the pale...
