    ID please

Saw quite a few of these guys on my strawberry garden, the biggest ones are about 5...6mm long, there are some much smaller with about 2mm. Any idea of what it is? Thanks a lot.

    SW80 ED, Basic Questions

Not just the scope but photography itself, I haven't photographed anything for more than a year now. It wasn't an easy decision as I really love bird photography, but for now at least time doesn't allow me to keep this hobby. If anyone needs a complete scope setup I still have mine for sale ;)...

    SW80 ED, Basic Questions

I used a flatener on the TL APO 804. But I don't think it's is necessary at all, there was maybe a couple of birds shots that I made with it that could be improved by using the flattener, for the rest it's useless. That's for APS-C, because for m4/3 and smaller it a complete waste of money.

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

Dan, I really can't agree with you here, all the scopes I used had near perfect bokeh. I’ve never seen any effect like that from my scopes. My 804 weights slightly less than 2.5Kg, but I removed the dual focuser knob, witch was about 130g.

Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 DI IF VC USD

Agree, I'd love to see those too.

Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 DI IF VC USD

Very true, but I passed on the 400 F/5.6 several years ago when I went Nikon and regretted it. Now I'm using Canon and have the chance to get it again, but the Tamron is looking nice too. I'm just afraid in a few months I regret again for not buying the Canon 400mm instead... and I know I will...

Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 DI IF VC USD

These are quite good for big crops no doubt. But from what I saw with the Tamron in the quick test I've made, I'm not sure it wont keep up with it. I'm not saying the tamron is as good as the 400mm... it's not. But taking into account the FL difference and having an image 50% bigger for a...

Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 DI IF VC USD

I’ll bet the 400mm will have far better ability to be cropped, but a 600mm would need to be cropped less. Taking that extra 200mm into account, witch would give you the better image if you're going for the 960mm FOV while shooting from the same place? Will the 400mm take a 1.5x upsize and still...

Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 DI IF VC USD

If I was to get a 400mm F5.6 and use it with a 600d, witch TCs could I get that would still allow me AF with this body? Any tamron or kenko would do?

Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 DI IF VC USD

I don't think anyone should expect the 150-600 to be as good as the canon 400mm F5.6, or any other good prime. But how good is the 400 F/5.6 with a 1.4x TC on? Does it still stand to that much cropping? the only comparison I've saw from both at 560/600mm F/8 was very similar with the tamron...

Tamron SP 150-600mm F5-6.3 DI IF VC USD

Dust doesn't surprise me that much, it was a real issue with the old 200-500, I had tons of dust with mine in the first week of use, I actually send that lens back twice in a year to be cleaned. I guess this is to be expected in a lens with such a long zoom range that is not completely weather...

Pics with ultra high end refractor

Definitely very good images. But at this size at least I don't see them being much better than anything that could be done with the other scopes used here. I don't mean these telescopes aren't better, I just doubt a DSLR would take advantage of any increase of resolution they can provide. Can...

Astro Physics 130GT vs the "morris" special...

Sorry, but will disagree with some of what you wrote. A super telephoto lens doesn't focus much closer, a 500 F4 has a MFD of 3,7 meters, witch is roughly the same as my 480mm telescope at 3,9 meters. But the telescope has zero breathing so it gets a higher magnification factor in the end...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Setups!

In last resort you could try a oil filter wrench, like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/47/Oil-filter_wrench.jpg With care I don't think you would damage anything. But if it doesn't come out, it's probably not worth to force it. A neoprene cover would work just as well...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Setups!

No, mine is the older version with the single piece tube. Looking at the new scope, I assume that if the middle ring doesn't come out you can take the dew shield off by unscrewing it’s rear ring (the part you need to remove the felt). Then you’ll be able to unscrew the lens cell off the main...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Setups!

Actually that section of wikipedia article explains exactly what happens with our telescopes (or any lens that focus by extension), and why it needs to be focused in or out as the distance of the object to focus varies. Basically it shows the mathematical ratio between the distance of focus and...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Setups!

It's the focal lenght drop when focusing upclose. Happens with all IF lenses, some more than others depending on the design (zooms more than primes, etc). A telescope as no focus breathing at all.

    Astroscope + DSLR = Setups!

Excluding the Mamiya because I've never tried it, the TL is largely superior to any of theses lenses in anything related to image quality. Also, keep in mind these lenses Tstop, the Tamron 200-500 has a very comparable Tstop to the ED80 at infinity. So it's actually not that fast. And the...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Setups!

Congrats on the new scope, it's a very good choice IMHO ;) That's why I went with the trouble of putting an iris in mine. F/6 is very shallow if we shoot upclose.

    Micro Four-Thirds

I disagree with the electronic shutter being useless for birding, it was the feature that made me get a G5 when it came out, I took over 8000 shots with the camera and most of them were with the silent shutter on. It's the feature I miss the most after selling that camera. It's useless for...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Setups!

The stopped down image doesn't appear sharper to me, what it seems is the focus is off in the wide open image. Take a look at the left side, on the aluminium tape on that pipe, sharpness there appears almost identical. The smaller pipe of course it's very soft on the wide open image, but that...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

Does the 5D has an electronic curtain? I'm not used to canons so I don't know, but that image does seem like electronic curtain issues to me. My flattener was the skywatcher (same as WO), I still have it if you need one, I'll sell it to you very cheap :P Frankly I didn't like it on APS-C...

    Astroscope + DSLR = Gallery!

I use the TL 804 with a 2" focuser, but I have no experience with full frame, so I really cannot tell you anything for sure. I can give you some opinions though. First a question, are you using a flattener with the 72? I seriously doubt that vignetting comes from the focuser itself, there's...

    TS 107/700 triplet

The 107 is a bit on the heavy side, yes, specially if you're only going to have that scope, in my case my main scope will still be the TL 804, the 107 is going to be for those situations when I really can't get close enough. But the 90 has little advantage over the ED80, is a bit better...

Sony SLT vs. NEX for photography with astro-telescopes

Are you using the external EVF? or the camera's back screen? If it's the screen I'd strongly advise you to get the EVF or a camera with EVF. I tried using the back screen a few times when I'm sitting on a hide, mostly photos turns out OOF. It's much easier to focus from the EVF, at least for...
