Day out in North Wales A good day out in North Wales with Ben. Minera Quarry had at least four Cuckoos calling and flying, also a Peregrine. Lifting a reptile refuge sheet revealed the tiniest Slow Worm I’ve ever seen, not much bigger than a large centipede. Lots of Early Purple Orchid in the...

It always cheers me to see this thread rekindled, good work Steve. I’ll contribute when I can but it won’t be till mid-April earliest as I’m off on Friday on the Greenwings Orchid Odyssey to Rhodes, hosted by Jon Dunn. Thereafter I’ll be out and about in all the usual haunts! Jeff Hodgson

    Ladys-slipper Orchid

I decided Id have a few nights away, so went up to the Lake District, essentially to see Ladys Slipper and Coralroot, but also to take in Leighton Moss and anything else that might be around. Just up the road from Leighton Moss is Gaitbarrow, worth a visit at any time of year, but particularly...

    Early Purple Orchid

I had a quiet orchid season this year after Sue died in April, but now the seasons over I thought Id post one or two of the things Ive seen this year. Eryrys, Denbighshire 12th May 2018 These are my first orchids of the year, very late in this odd spring were having. I find them each year in...

You’re quite right about the tinges of green on the ovaries Mike, and it could be that that hint of green is also diluting the ‘pinkness’ of this plant, which is not as bright as I’d expected. Nonetheless it’s a step on the way for me, as I’d not even seen a ‘near rosea’ before Jeff

Broad-leaved Helleborine - Epipactis helleborine Went to Minera Quarry yesterday with old chum Clive as it had been reported that Autumn Gentian were in flower. That will require another visit, plenty of plants but few in flower as yet. There were also plenty of Broad-leaved Helleborine, most...

There were also plenty of Broad-leaved Helleborine, most of which had gone over, but some still in flower...

Comment by 'Guest' in media 'Violet Helleborine - Epipactis purpurata v rosea'

Thanks Kit, having looked at photographs and seen the florets on screen Im always amazed by how small they are in the flesh. My estimate of 15mm is not far off the mark, they're certainly far less than an inch, or 25mm in new money Jeff

Yes it stands tall doesn’t it Rich, so many rosea seem to be bent over, almost distorted. Wish it had been a bit brighter pink though, still, can’t have everything. Jeff

Thank you Hans & Judy, less spectacular than you might think. They shine very brightly in the dark woodland but tiny flowers, only around 15mm across. Jeff

Violet Helleborine Thanks to a tip off from Muba I knew this variant of Violet helleborine was growing in the colony at Coalbrookdale and thanks to his excellent directions I managed to find it growing on a precipitous slope in the depths of the beech woodland. This variant lacks chlorophyll...

    Violet Helleborine - Epipactis purpurata

A much less blousy plant, in some ways I prefer this rather delicate plant to the more robust examples.
  23. Violet Helleborine - Epipactis purpurata

    Violet Helleborine - Epipactis purpurata

The flower spikes are absolutely packed with florets. The name Violet Helleborine comes not from the colour of the flower but from the purple flush to the stem and leaves. As can be seen, the flowers are very bright, perhaps the cleanest of our helleborines, though this plant is just starting...

    Violet Helleborine - Epipactis purpurata

Probably my last Epipactis hunt of the year and off to Coalbrookdale in the Severn gorge at an unearthly hour of the morning to see Violet Helleborine. This is our nearest site for these plants. They grow in dark beech woodland on a very steep slope and after rain the conditions combine to...
