8x30 E II vs Contemporary Binos

I considered adding this post to the giant E II thread, but maybe it would be better to start a new one. For those of you who own or have owned an 8x30 E II, how does it compare to other modern binoculars you've tried, particularly the the Conquest HD and similar models? I'm looking to replace...

    Ohio Hawk: Cooper's or Sharpie?

Had this visitor to my yard today; are these pics enough to confidently identify as a Sharpie? I always struggle to distinguish these species. Thanks.

Good spots for birding from car?

Does anyone know of good roads to bird from in the car, especially in or near the southwest part of the state? I lived in New Mexico for several years and really enjoyed places like Bosque del Apache NWR, where much of the birding can be done from within the vehicle. Among other things, it...

    Bird call, Dayton Ohio

I heard two birds calling at each other this evening; one was quite close to me and in a tall tree, but I was never able to see either bird. Based on the birds I did identify, I would guess these are some sort of woodpeckers, but I really have no idea. An audio file is attached, thanks for reading!

Anyone else at American Bird Expo?

I went to Columbus on Saturday and enjoyed gawking at the equipment I'll never be able to afford and don't really need. Some personal highlights were: A brief presentation on Zeiss' HT and SF offerings by Stephen Ingraham. Seems that the HT was geared toward German hunters, who often value...

    Vertical misalignment

I have a pair of the dielectric-coated Nikon 8x42 ATBs from 2011 that have always given images that are vertically misaligned, and by this I mean that the right image circle shows an area that is noticeably above and to the right of what the left image shows; this is the case even when looking...

    Hummingbird feeder defense

I am always amazed at how territorial hummingbirds can be in regards to a feeder. It can be more rewarding watching the hummingbirds defend the feeder than actually watching them feeding. My small feeder has three feeding ports, but it's rare that I'll see more than two Black-chinned feeding at...

    Sparrow - Albuquerque, New Mexico

I came across two of these guys at my feeder today. I'm still somewhat of a novice, and am having a hard time matching it to anything in my Nat Geo and Sibley guides. Thanks in advance!

What determines the order of species in a field guide

So I was reading through my North American field guides and started wondering what the reason is for putting bird families in the order that they are. For example, the 6th edition of the National Geographic field guide has the following order for the first several families of birds: Ducks...

Bufflehead at Rio Grande Nature Center...in mid-May

I saw a Bufflehead this morning at the RGNC in the Candelaria pond, which is rather uncommon in New Mexico at this time of the year. The white spot on the side of the head was largish for a female, so this may have been a nonbreeding male.

How to buy EII in USA?

I recently bought a pair of 8x32 SEs, which I enjoyed from the start and like more with each use. I love the wide field of view with respect to the Monarch 8x42 (admittedly the only other bino I've used recently). But I started thinking: if 7.5 degrees is this nice, I wonder what the 8.8...

    Special Field Guide Needed?

Hello, I'm still fairly new to birding, and want to begin watching raptors around New Mexico. I was wondering whether a general-purpose field guide such as National Geographic is sufficient, or whether I should consider buying one of the specialized raptor field guides such as "A Photographic...

    Zeiss Victory Compact 8x20?

I am tempted to get the 8x20 Victory Compact as a lightweight birding bino for occasions when I do not want my Nikon 8x32 SEs around my neck all day. But I have never used anything this small before and am wondering whether the views would really be acceptable for birding, or whether I would...

    Adorama cheap 8x32 Premier SEs

I have been looking around for the best binoculars for the buck, and landed on the Premier SEs. Looking at online retailers, there appears to be a lot of price variation among different dealers, but Adorama has by far the lowest price--$549 with free shipping! Any idea how they are able to sell...
