Red Sea Coast - Jan 2008

Hi All I was lucky enough to go to Egypt this January for a week's B (:, mostly stopping in a Beach Resort on the outskirts of Hurghada but also an overnight jaunt to Shalatein for the specialities. It was well worth the effort. This report has been taken directly from my website, and the...

    Phalarope (sp)

Hi All Wondered what the general consensus was on this phalarope. It was taken at Santa Pola Salinas two weeks ago by a birder I do not know. I did not see the bird and only have these for reference. In all honesty I have mixed feeling as regards it's identification, but I am not very good at...

    Patch List for 2007

Happy New Year to all here's hoping for a fantastic bird-filled 2007. After 2006's poor year on the local patch I am setting myself a target of seeing 200 species within this year. I have never acheived this target best year so far being 187, and I am away for a good proportion of the year too...

    Birding Spanish Style

Was out for a quiet lunchtime drink this afternoon and came across this little beauty. Even more brilliant since it's the first Barn Owl I have seen in my recording area and takes my town centre owls to 4 - Barn, Scop's & Little with a heard only Tawny. Cheers Jules

    Strange hunting behavior

Hi Over the past few days I (& guests) have witnessed a couple of interesting behavioural sights to do with Bonelli's Eagle & Merlin. Firstly whilst watching a male Bonelli's Eagle it was seen to drop quickly and proceed all the way to the ground. It then flew up to one of it's redundant nests...

Wanted: Flight shots of Ruppell's Vulture

Hi all I am looking for flight photos of Ruppell's Griffon Vulture for me to be able to look at one or two things regarding their identification and to satisfy my own curiosity. They are only for my personal use and will not feature in any article or website unless specifically asked for at a...

    Jamaican Bird ID

Hi Had this photo sent to me by relatives that recently visited Jamaica, requiring an identification. However I have never been to the West Indies, and don't have a field guide to cover them either. I am sure someone out there will be able to help, as I suspect it's a common bird of Jamaica...

    Not the usual Costa Blanca!

Hi All The weather of late has been somewhat inclement on the coast and worse higher up. This is probably what people don't associate with the Costa Balnca, or just 15Km inland. The kids loved it, first they have seen since leaving Scotland and it was bizarre being able to drive home in 20...

    Guess the species

Hi all Around this time last year I offered Sean (Ghostly Vision) a prize to one of his photo i.d. quizes, which was won by James Lowther. I offered a free 4 nights stay at the B & B with 3 days birding for 2 people, paying for their own flights, evening meals, and a small contribution for...

    Annular Eclipse at Pego Marsh

This morning I was out at my local patch as usual looking for resident and migrant birds. However today was slightly diffirent as there was an annular eclipse centred right over us and with clear skies things were looking good. At around 10:30 (local time) the moon started to pass in front of...

    Sheared Quick Release Shoe

Hi All Maybe a word of warning. Yesterday I dropped my Swarovski ATS 65 & tripod from about a height of 1m (car boot height) and the cast shoe sheared inside the casing. I know you don't want to be dropping a scope at any time but this was rather tame in comparison to what other scope owners...

    Comments on ID Please

Hi All Found this Phyllosc today amongst the 100's of Chiffchaffs at Oliva/Pego Marsh, Valencia Region. I have some thoughts on it's identification but would welcome opinions from anyone willing to bother. Thanks for your assistance. Jules

    Organising a pelagic-need tips (part 2)

Hi Firstly apologies to Edward for hi-jacking his title but it was ideal and has also helped me sort the 'Chum' and how to make it. I am currently organising a pelagic trip from Denia (headland just north of Alicante) in the Mediterranean Sea. I was wondering if anyone had any idea on how far...

    Spainish East Coast Seawatching

Hi First time i've tried this so please bear with me. I am a huge seawatching fan with me spending a lot of time in Fife (Fife Ness & Kinghorn) plying my trade to varying amounts of success. The bug started in Yorkshire where you can be slightly spoilt for sea-bird rarities. Anyway i am soon...
