    Yorkshire Birding

    I'm starting to prefer St Aidens to Fairburn, although theres only one hide overlooking St Aidens. RSPB Blacktofts, YWT North Cave, Alkborough Flats and LWT Far Ings are all worth a drive east, but RSPB Old Moor and YWT Potteric Carr are closer to Heckhuddersfax.

    3 Waxwings this afternoon close by Headingley Rail station. Also flock (30+) of Fieldfare on Model Allotments, usually only get odd one or two.

    New computer - recommendations?

    Irrespective of platform, I would recommend using two monitors if you have the space. Nearly all modern graphics cards will support this. My studio setup has two desktop computers, both have 19" and 28" monitors attached. The advantage is you can put all the tools on one screen and the work area...

    Sites for photography

    Wheldrake Ings is south of York and not far from the A1 - water levels are very high at the moment but theres a lot of waterfowl on the reserve. RSPB Fairburn Ings and St Aidens are just off the Ferrybridge A1 / M62 junction. There are hides at Fairburn but not on st Aidens.

    Yorkshire Birding

    For years had Greenfinches in the street, and early summer 4 males and 2 females more or less resident in tree we hang the birdfeeders in. Have not seen or heard any since mid August. No increase in Goldfinch here, steady numbers of around 15 or so month in month out hanging out in Burley Park...

    Waxwings at Hodsock Priory

    Visited Hodsock Priory (nr. Blyth, Worksop) today. At lunchtime, 7 Waxwings in a tree in the ornamental garden. There for the hour or so we walked around.

    Well couldn't have been more wrong. 8 Waxwings, 10+ Bramblings, large flocks mixed finches and 6 Fieldfare. Plus 200+ Geese moving from direction of Eccup towards Horsforth.

    Red kites .

    If you don't mind the walk from either Alwoodley Lane or (much longer) Golden Acre, then get to the end of Eccup Moor Road near Owlett Farm, just north of Eccup reservoir. There is a raptor viewing point down on the actual dam wall, but Kites tend to sit in the few trees at the end of the Road...

    Leeds owls

    Nuthatches are common in the woods at Roundhay Park, but for guaranteed opportunities try the feeding point in Golden Acre park, and the Marsh Hide at YWT Adel Dam. Also chuffed that we've seen one a few times this autumn in the trees right outside our window in Burley.

    RSPB web site has a bird ID tool which sometimes works quite well. Looking forward to any photos you post here, it's interesting how many different birds you can see fairly close to the city center.

    Yorkshire Birding

    Signed the petition. On LSW at Adel, we're regular visitors and have only once seen one, five years ago. It's rare not to see at least one GSW, or a SpHk or two. A mate of mine works for the Trust and visits several times a week. I'll ask what he's seen recently.

    Very pleasing walk from Huby to Pool in Wharfedale via Almscliff crag. Highlights were good views of male and female Wheatear, and Dipper and Grey Wagtail next to each other, just a few feet from where we were standing.

    That's interesting - haven't been to Rodley in a while. We've seen them around Eccup village. No sign of this mornings bird later in the day. But the park (and Vinery Road) were 'busy', including a GSW drumming and 40+ Red Wing.

    It made me do a double take. However, Vinery Road gets plenty of Long Tails, Goldfinch, Dunnock and theres been a Black Cap pair on feeders every day for months now.     Red Legged Partridge pottering about in Burley Park LS4 this morning. Easily approached, which was a bit worrying. Made a change from the usual Red Wing, GS Woodpeckers and Goldfinch.
