Thanks James. Is trail 6 the one that leads down besides one of the little chalets, not far from the HQ? That's where this was taken. We had great views of a pair who hopped about only a couple of metres away for at least 20 minutes.

'Escape' in Dorset - laughing-thrush, but what kind?

Yes, that's a Red-tailed Laughingthrush, Garrulax milnei, which has a rufous cap, grey mantle and scaling on the breast and back.

'Escape' in Dorset - laughing-thrush, but what kind?

That's two chances to get my first BF tick missed! I'm off to Borneo on Sunday and then back to the U.K. for the summer. Have a good time in Beijing and good birding.

    What is . . .

You will probably get some forceful opinions in reply to this question, but I'll have a go at a neutral definition. A twitcher is somebody who travels to see a particular bird for the purpose of adding it to their list.

    decline in birder competency

I think I've made a similar point myself elsewhere, but with the important addition of the opinion that ANY positive interest in birds should be encouraged. I'm perhaps a little sensitive about this because I live in a country where many people think of birds as lunch or vermin or both. But if...

    decline in birder competency

There have been some very interesting points made here but I'm wondering why a thread on the decline in birder competence is now on to its sixth page whilst a surely much more positive one on how to take field notes has only managed eight replies. I am yet another teacher and don't find that...

    UFO in China

I'm sure this is a female Daurian Redstart. The ones we get round here don't seem to have a very obvious eyering.

    UFO in China

Hi Rich, welcome to Bird Forum. I would agree that this is a female Daurian Redstart.

    Social or solitary birder?

Of course, I'm a little ray of sunshine and love everybody :hippy: ...though strangely enough, I'm a solitary birder too.

    Social or solitary birder?

Reading some of the threads on this forum - the one about people you meet in hides for example - might give the impression that we are all fairly solitary creatures because if there's one thing that birders seem to dislike more than people in general, it's other birders (twitchers, dudes, world...

    Jiuzhaigou

Thanks Mark, I found a bit of info on there. Sorry I can't help you with the Penghu Islands question - I've been there but before I got into birding.

    Quiet day at Beidaihe

Dragged myself out of bed at 6 am to get the train to Beidaihe, and wished I hadn't bothered when I got there to find the place invisible through the mist. :storm: Walked through the woods across from the sandflats and as the day brightened got a few waterbirds, including several Yellow...

    Jiuzhaigou

Does anyone have any information about birding Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan? I have a week's holiday in July and am weighing up where to go. Thanks. Helen

Non-Birders sightings that make you go "AAARGH!!!"

One for my fellow China birders: "A big bird, maybe a crane? Blue, black and white with a long tail." Give up? Blue Magpie. I thought I was bad at estimating size.

    Greetings from Taiwan

Hi Mark, whereabouts is Yunlin County? I spent a year in Miaoli in the dark days before I was a birder and have never forgiven myself the opportunities I missed!

Thanks, sorry about the poor quality photo. It took me three trips to Khao Yai to see it.

Relict and Saunders' Gulls at Beidahe, China

I saw Relict Gull on the sand flats at Beidaihe in September and again in October, but not on the last few trips. I've never seen Saunders there. I've also heard that Happy Island is good for both.

    Metropolis with birds

It would be hard to underestimate Beijing unless you really like sparrows, unfortunately.
