Hi folks, i have just spent a couple of weeks north east of Malaga, in the hills above a place called El Borge, saw a few birds of higher ground i could ID and some i couldn't, but one species had me beat, saw a pair of them going away from me gliding a quite fast and level flight, i was above...

    Monte Gordo, March 2023

Last summer we had a two week stay at a cottage just SW of Ourique, the lady owner told us she had a Female Little Bustard with chicks the season before and i saw a Female with 3 young in her garden so it seems she has a small population on her land which is nice considering the situation as a...

Birds you could watch for hours and hours...

Packs of Swift screaming between the houses on my mothers estate, the agility is fantastic so i'm really envious of folk who get to watch Hobby for good amount of time, only ever seen them in Laparade, France where both were sitting on power lines.

Smallest prey items taken by Peregrine falcon

I once asked this question to the wardens at Malham Cove and he replied " anything from Blue Tits to Curlew ", saying when they take a Jackdaw from the colony there all hell breaks lose and the times they take Curlews to the nest its like watching a bi-plane coming in !. Whilst at Malham i've...

    Birding in Alicante Province

I managed to get a couple of hours at Montnegre and well worth the drive over there too, an hours watching gave me Goshawk, a quite dark plumaged Bonelli's Eagle, two larger all dark brown Eagles that i'm guessing were Golden Eagles, six bee Eaters, Woodchat Shrike and a not certain but...

    Territorial fly tipping.

The road is non public, used by fork trucks and Delivery tankers, something comes along every 10 minutes or so. Back at work weds morning and i'm curious to see if they're still there.

    Territorial fly tipping.

I work on a large industrial complex populated by many hundreds of Gulls using various rooftops for roosting and nesting, for three days and nights now a pair of Herring Gulls have been involved in a sort of fly tipping competition, one picks a twig and drops it on the road, the other either...

Nuthatch preying on Marsh tit chicks?

The BBC Spring watch series shows just how many nests get predated by other birds, this years edition showed a Great spotted woodpecker taking tree creeper chicks from the nest and also showing plenty of interest in a Blue Tit nest box. A Little Owl cleared a Blackbird nest in one barn then...

    Birding in the Charente-Maritime department

You can head north west 30 ks or so to Le Gua, lots of ponds, pools, waterways near the mussel beds, you should see Marsh Harrier, Black Kite, Short toed Eagle & Black winged Stilts, the cereal fields of Sablonceau nearby are good for Montagu's Harrier too.

    Pied Kingfisher.

I posted this on a forum ages ago but cannot remember if it was this one or not . Anyway a few year back in Cala Bassa, Ibiza i'm sure I saw a Pied Kingfisher zipping along the shoreline. Having done a bit of searching it seems they are a "Eastern / African " bird but would it be possible for...

    Lanzarote Costa Teguise birding

I'm no birdwatching expert but do keep my eyes open when i'm out and about. We've been to Fuerteventura & Lanzarote many times and I've found Fuerteventura to be better. Briefly, Black Bellied Sand Grouse and Pied Flycatcher on Lanzarote. And on Fuerteventura, the centre to South, Egyptian...

    Poitou Charentes, Charente Maritime.

Hi Eugene, your advice was pretty good, I did get to see just about every one you mentioned. We were in a gite near Nancras on the Saintes - Marennes road, and I saw Black Kites, Buzzard and Short toed Eagle every day but the highlight was a male Montagu's harrier hunting over the crop fields...

What are the strangest nest sites you have come across

Many years ago I erected some scaffold on a long term building project against the side of a hall, within days a pair of Mistle Thrush built a nest on the junction of some cast iron exterior water pipe in a totally exposed position. An amazing site considering where they'd normally nest, and...

    Unknown raptor.

Well I've been on the Spain forum and the fella on there says the Nerja bird could possibly be a Bonelli's Eagle, i've looked at his pics and it does look like it . He says the French birds are likely to be Honey Buzzards, so it seems i'm sorted.

Birding on the Costa del Sol (Malaga)

Thanks for reply Luis Alberto. It was a single bird near Nerja, but the five in Lot et Garonne were circling in a group maybe 100 metres around. So that takes the Bonelli out of the puzzle for France ?. Edited to add that having gone through your pics, the Bonelli one you posted on Sunday 25th...
