Hi everyone, I’ve been looking at birding tours in Costa Rica. Has anyone been on the 16 day self drive tour with Aratinga? If so should any sites be omitted and others inserted? Is February a good time to go? Many thanks for replies and help! Best regards CCR

    Exuviae 27 June, Belgium

Please can you tell me what this is? I didn’t see it emerge on the garden pond. The pond is only a few years old. I am in the Belgian Ardennes one hour ten from the border with Luxembourg. I have only ever seen two Zygoptera and a patrolling male Blue Hawker here.

    Is this an oxygenating plant?

Please can someone identify this plant, which was part of a ‘mat’ on the waters’ surface. I suppose it was rooted to the bottom of the pond, but this piece broke away quite easily. I don’t want to put an invasive species into my dragonfly pond. Thanks to you all again.

All of these were found in a ditch in West Sussex. Are the first four all Callitriche, but perhaps different species? Number 4 is the same as 2 from my previous thread and it is definitely a water plant. Number 5 looks like it has distinctive leaves, is it a Veronica? Thanks in advance for your...

    Swimming Bat in Belgian Ardennes

Yesterday in daylight I was observing a small bat flying over the water in a quarry. Suddenly it dropped into the water and immediately began to swim towards a wall at the side. The swimming appeared confident and I thought the fact it was in the water was not an error it had made. It crawled up...

    House Martin nest boxes

I have a couple of House Martin boxes to put up next year. I was just wondering how likely they are to be occupied? Some of my boxes, eg Tree Creeper box, have never been touched. Also how much of a problem can sparrows be in taking over the box? There are a few pairs nearby. With thanks.
