    Mull In October

Check the dates of the Isle of Mull Rally, you don't want to be there at the same time unless you're a car nut. Also Tobermory is the wrong end of the island for wildlife, we are quite civilized at this end of the island as well.

The camera should have come with Canon's own software. Digital Photo Professional is the one you want. Can also be downloaded from the Canon website I would think.

    Canon dSLR body choice

Mifsuds have a few bodies available 2nd hand at prices cheaper than you have quoted and they're only just down the road from you at Brixham, you could take a trip down to Yarner Woods early one morning and then carry on down to see them. See here...

    OLYMPUS SP-800 30x zoom

Please explain the phrase "no grain" in your advert. If you're referring to image noise and this statement is accurate it would be a technological masterpiece! and Olympus would be shouting a lot louder about it.

Installing Digita Photo Professional on netbook

One solution here. http://wildlifeacrossthewater.blogspot.com/2009/07/hardware-software-virtual-screen-res-on.html Never had to try it myself but knew I had read about it somewhere

Best way to see Mull in a day?

Just as well you didn't get your camera out. Check out his diary entry for 21/5/08 Not very photographer friendly!

    feather details

You actually asked about feather detail but even so I gave you the answer to your exposure question. If you notice I increased the exposure by .75 so if you had over exposed by 2/3 by changing your exposure compensation you would have had much the same result. Failing that use manual exposure...

    feather details

Using lightroom. Increased exposure +.75 Reduced highlights using recovery tool +17 Sharpened very slightly, would probably sharpen a lot better using the full size file.

    Isle of Mull - Roads

Hi there I can only speak for the southern part of Mull as I don't get up to the top end very often but the roads in this part of the island are fine for your BMW as long as you take a bit of care. We have had a very wet August with a couple of very heavy storms which have opened some potholes...

    anyone using a 180mm macro

I've got one, great lens, working distance is great. As for it hunting with the kenko 1.4x yes it does but most of my macro is done in mf so it's not really a problem. If you buy one hang on to your sigma 105 as I sometimes turn to my sigma 50mm marco when I want something a little more portable

    Backwater Birding - Seaton, Devon

So long and thanks for all the birds Hi all I know I haven't posted much on here, but just wanted to thank you all for keeping a great thread going. I have recently upped sticks and moved to the Isle of Mull so won't be popping down next time something good turns up on the estuary. Keep up the...

Oban area from Tuesday 12th May 09

Hi Gillian In my opinion an organized trip is one of the best things you can do, it shows you what's about and where. You can then relax a bit for the rest of your stay and not have to spend your time rushing around trying to find that elusive bird/mammal that you haven't been able to track...

    New lens choice.

Hi Mick, Welcome to BF Given your current lens line up you'll hate anything other than the Canon 500 f4. I got one last year and it's great but remember to budget for a really good tripod and head. While you're saving the Canon 300f4 is a good sharp lens and takes a 1.4x well.

Photographing the night sky with the Rebel XSi

Hi there My best guess is the camera isn't getting a focus lock. Put it on manual focus and set the lens to infinity. Good luck

    Backwater Birding - Seaton, Devon

Hi all Long time no post. So happy Easter/Christmas/New Year (delete as required) Had a quick trip to Beer this morning with some friends visiting from Mull. We looked long and hard for the Black Redstart with no luck so decided to walk up hill to try our luck with the Firecrest. Bumped into Bun...

Bird species keyword libraries for LR

Thanks for that Mark. I've just had a quick look and it seems to be a great addition to lightroom. Should make life a lot easier. A bit busy to do anything about it this week so will download it in after I come back from Mull in 3 weeks. Many thanks for your hard work

    Backwater Birding - Seaton, Devon

I make no apologies for this post being non-bird related. If you're in need of a good laugh check Karen's blog. http://karenwoolley.blogspot.com/ Probably the best laugh I've had all day. Thank's folks!

    Backwater Birding - Seaton, Devon

Finally caught up with the Osprey today. Got to Coronation Corner at about 4 just in time to see it flying up stream past the car carrying a small fish, no time to set up the camera! Just after 6 the Osprey appeared again, catching upstream from where I was and then went off to the nest box pole...

    Metcheck

went on last night, came up with a message saying they were upgrading to a new faster server and gave the option to try their beta version of their new site (with a warning it was full of bugs) I clicked on this and it seemed to be the same as the old version. I will wander round my browser now...

    Backwater Birding - Seaton, Devon

Decided on a trip to the Seaton area today. First stop was the estuary, 8 black tailed godwits, one in near breeding plumage, were giving good close views on the near bank and they were in a fighting mood with squables breaking out every few minutes. Next was a trip up to the top of Seaton Hole...
