I bought the PUC during the kickstarter campaign and got it a lot cheaper than USD 249 (which I find a bit expensive for what it can do). Taking the PUC on a trip (mounted on a backpack) is something I tried once, but there were some major letdowns: the data gets stored on an internal MicroSD...

No, it can’t be wrong. There’s a Spotted Flycatcher somewhere in your garden. By the way, the device is called Birdweather PUC, and it’s a nice little gadget. At home, I recorded NFC from Great Bittern at least 3 times with it. (This species is not breeding anywhere near my place in Germany...

    Mallorca 2024

I spent the morning at the depuradora of Son Bosc and a bit later at Maria de la Salut. Those swifts that Geordie Dave didn’t see yesterday must have arrived last night (or were just arriving), as the air at the depuradora was full of them (mainly common, but there was at least one pallid). I...

I did a bit of seawatching from Punta de n‘Amer today. I just stayed for about 45 minutes, but my numbers seem to relatively match yours. I did not see any storm petrels, but I probably left too early for them. I’ll work my magic for Thursday! Hoping for something good! Other than that, my visit...

    Mallorca 2023

No, don’t be sorry! I figured as much, just wanted to make absolutely sure! I visited Son Real, the Depuradora, s‘Albufereta behind Can Cuarassa and Maristany today. Not many birds around. The large numbers of hirundines of the last couple of days seem to finally have left the island. Not much...

Hi Ian! Rufous Rock Thrush or Blue Rock Thrush? Cheers Martin

    Mallorca 2023

Of course, your wish is my command! Not only did I have at least 3 Red-rumped swallows at the depuradora Son Bosc today, but also a very special completely white Barn swallow. I’ve never seen a Barn swallow like that before! I spent a good hour trying to get a photo, with the bird only...

I believe the length of the claw is within its limits for Tree pipit. Clear Tree pipit for me.

With Ryan's permission, I extracted the audio from the video, reduced background noise and amplified it a bit. Here's the result. Personally, I think it might as well be a Sylvia spec's subsong. Mallorca unknown bird

I’ve listened to the recording and I’m very sure it’s not Iduna opaca. The song sounds like a subsong, like a young bird that is still learning. I’m not sure about the exact species though.

Sure! Shoot me an email! I'll pm you my contact info. Western Olivaceous Warbler is a very rare migrant in Mallorca.

That sounds intriguing! I’ve got a few ideas, but want to listen to it on my computer first and have a look at its sonogram. It’s not a GRW, in my opinion. Have you got any other recordings? Maybe sound only?

Temminck‘s Stint is a scarce winter visitor and migrant (somewhere between 10 and 100 birds each year). Certainly a good find anyway and a bird I still needed on my Mallorca list this year!

I think Maristany (the area behind that Lidl in Port d’Alcudia) is a good place to find Vagrant emperor. I’ve seen at least four imagos there, together with I believe Anax imperator and many Red-veined darters. Gotmar’s Roller was a fantastic bird to see (along with a Wood Warbler which I...

I met with Mike at the lighthouse of Portopetro this afternoon. For about 40 minutes, there was not a single bird above the ocean. We started discussing the possible reasons for this total absence when slowly the first Scopoli’s shearwaters came crossing by, quite far out in the distance. I...

    Mallorca 2022

Thank you! It didn’t seem to want to leave the island. It was flying SW (maybe towards Cala Morlanda). Or maybe it went down somewhere nearer but I couldn’t see it. Shame I didn’t have any luck in finding it again. Sea-watching from Punta de n‘Amer afterwards was as boring as it gets. Almost no...

    Mallorca 2022

I spent the afternoon at Punta de n‘Amer. Apart from the usual spectrum of birds I found a highly unusual one: I heard a pipit calling somewhere in the sky and immediately knew that I was onto something. As I found the bird flying above me, it called several times, a short „zit“, comparable to...

    Mallorca 2022

Yes Mike, I was at the Cap today! I spent two and a half hours trying to find something special. I found a very distant Bonelli’s eagle, one Hobby, a group of 42 European Beeeaters, a plethora of Common Ravens (I think there were around 60, difficult to count as they were very agile and...

My last visit to Son Real today, going home tomorrow. Besides at least two singing male Balearic Warblers nothing really worth mentioning (Tawny Pipits, Thekla Larks, Woodchat Shrikes, Stonechats, Turtle Doves, Crossbills, Blackcaps, Chaffinches and a few other common species). Well, it’s always...

    Mallorca 2022

Hi Stew! We saw a Nightjar last night. It was singing extensively and then hunting some insects at Punta de n‘Amer. Other additions to my list were Long Eared Owls, at least 3 permanently calling young and one adult bird flying above the one way street (Carrer dels Baladres) on the western edge...

Phil, would you say the Dartford Warblers are an easy catch there (when not having dogs around)? I’ve never found any Dartford Warblers here in Mallorca, and I’ve often looked for them at Son Real and Punta de n‘Amer (where they should be around, if I am not mistaken). Martin

My visit to the tower of Albercutx once again produced 5 Honey Buzzards and 3 Aguilucho Laguneros - Marsh Harriers. At the Albufereta I had 3 Bee Eaters flying over and some kind of white domestic goose far out in the distance. All the regular birds were present as well. I decided to have a...

I’ve managed to rediscover the Black Headed Bunting merely minutes after Mike had left. Mike and I had heard it before singing out of a tree only a few meters away from us. We saw some movement, moments later a bird flew off which I thought could have been the BHB. We looked for it in the area...
