    10 x nn SV recommendations

SP: Personally, a larger/heavier binocular is easier for me to hold steady than a smaller/lighter example. Ergos or hand comfort is really not a big issue to me with any binocular--including Canons IS. The comparison I use is looking at a house or a boat light in the dark at 100 or 200...

Binoculars for sustained use in shade and low light

Chicored: Have posted before my personal experience with the HT 10x54 and the 10x56 Swaro SLC (new model). I wanted that Zeiss badly for the ergos, but the SLC's performance for me was compelling in low to very low light. It wasn't a one-off comparison either--had both for months. Excellent bin.

    Low light Bins?

Pronghunter: Was fortunate to have new issue 10x54 Zeiss HT, 10x56 Swaro SLC, 10x42 Canon and an 8.5x42 Swaro EL concurrently and compare them side by side over a number of months. The well-used 8.5x42 was completely refurbished by Swaro including new lens a couple years ago. We have a...

Reasons not to buy Zeiss SF 8x42?

Temmie: I cannot speak for the OP. Veer is a strong word, for example, what picture does a veering car create in my mind...too many Tequilas! As I said changes in corporate make me wary. My anecdotal experience with Zeiss products via CS over the last couple years reinforces that wariness...

Reasons not to buy Zeiss SF 8x42?

Temmie: Was your comment about Zeiss existing in years derived from my post #44? If so, my point was I don't sell my bins generally speaking and have bins that are decades old from new. Not that I keep them all but I like quality and generally keep such stuff ...:) My comments about...

Reasons not to buy Zeiss SF 8x42?

Hi Lee: You have a talent for handling potential issues well and I appreciate that particularly in a moderator. Additionally, I appreciate that Herr Schmitz took the time and effort to put minds at ease. I do not doubt his sincerity. I really am not blessed with such grace, so do more lurking...

Reasons not to buy Zeiss SF 8x42?

ASP: post 1...Your eyes and hands are the best qualified to decide. That said, at the risk of stirring up Zeiss defense.... I generally buy a couple of brands and compare for a while, selling the losing bino at an acceptable loss rather than dinging the seller. Thus far, have kept the...

    A Tale of Three Swarovskis

Ravens, owls & eagles pretty much round it out for me. My wife is keen on raptors. We live in the woods and support flocks of smaller birds so the 32mm gets a workout...the corporate farming practices have not been kind to song birds in the area over the years. Bought a 7x42 Habicht in the...

    A Tale of Three Swarovskis

I love the slow focus mechanism on the 8.5 EL I bought in 2000. Apparently I am the only one. They offered to replace it for the refurbishment it had recently, but did decline.

    Twilight Viewing

Agreed. Am reasonably sure the AK prism change to the 56mm came in 2014 as did update my 15x56 SLCs then. Those are no slouch in low light department either, for that matter.

    Twilight Viewing

Tricky, IIRC the intro year was 2014. (add 30 to the SN). Someone knowledgeable may correct that. Thus, used market may be a bit thin. No doubt others have good suggestions for hedgies...:)

    Twilight Viewing

Tricky: fwiw, have put some effort forth in low light viewing from dusk well into the night over the years for general wildlife and owls in the birding sector. Have doubts that the 8x50 Trin would yield a significant advantage over the 10x42 Ultra. Different yes, advantage no. A half hour...

    Zeiss ht discontinued ?

Thanks. Do have some familiarity with their function. Made a number of comparisons with a number of bins, including a new 10x56 SLC. Spent some time at it.

Swarovski EL 10x50 vs Zeiss HT 10x54 Help

Blaser, fwiw, I should add that when am observing specifically in very low light I pair the 10x56 with the 15x, rather than the 8.5x42. Not that it makes enough difference to write about, but to say there is an advantage to a little more power and aperture for what you are looking for. For...

Swarovski EL 10x50 vs Zeiss HT 10x54 Help

Blaser: an opinion. Have compared the 10x54 HT to the new models of the 15x SLC and the 10x SLC over a period of months. But no direct comparisons to the 10x50 EL. The tripod view of the 15x56 is 1st rate, particularly for long sits at a long ways. Have put them to good use hand-held for...

    Finally compared 15X56 and 12X50 Side-By-Side

Certainly. (Adhoc post 25) Not a recommendation, just some info on how the handheld 15x worked for me. And yep, they are a handful. If I used it with a support like my wife does, I would have stayed with it over the Canon.

I have $2K burning a hole in my pocket what binocular should I buy?

Well Dennis, I am glad you found them excellent. My wife and I had some fun sitting on the picnic table looking across the river after sunset one evening with the 10x42Canon turning the IS on and off, watching a heron fishing minnows. To me, the IS on brightened the picture--which of course, it...

I have $2K burning a hole in my pocket what binocular should I buy?

Dennis: please describe what you mean by aberration free axial image? Where or how is that apparent? And please, are you referring to doing the comparison with a 10x56 SLC Swaro to the 8x56, or another 10x56?

    Finally compared 15X56 and 12X50 Side-By-Side

Adhoc: My wife employs an excellent 15x56 SLC on tripod for night skes. I used it for distance wildlife, handheld. What stood out to me was the level of detail that bino provided with short looks. No question that a tripod brings out its best, but for a quick handheld look they cetainly gave...

    canon 10x42 vs swarovski 10x56

Patudo (#26) We are fortunate to own both. The IS won my wife over over on the first look at the night sky and became her only handheld. I wouldn't want to choose between them if held to one, as would probably pick the 8.5x42. They are both more or less specialty glass for us, low-light...
