    Thanks everyone - I appreciate your help. Actually that was my initial thought after pouring over my Sibley and internet images, but I managed to confuse myself... This is a first hooded merganser for me, so I'm pleased. I'd love to see a male adult!

    Thank you so much! I've just had a look at some pictures and that's definitely correct. I think I missed it because I looked at a picture of the male which has different colouring. :-)
