Which binocular(s) did you use today?

For the last few weeks I've used the Docter Nobilem 10x50 (aka Brontosaurus, The Dumbell, Dr No) almost exclusively. You can never have too much time with a binocular, but 2 to 4 hour stints glued to the binoculars (virtually all my targets are beyond the naked eye), in conditions ranging from...

Soaring Raptor - Baluran National Park, East Java, Indonesia. 14 April 2025

I'm pretty sure your bird is a (oriental) honey buzzard, but am unsure re subspecies/morph. Awaiting more informed commentary...

News from Zeiss - SFL 50

That makes good business sense I think. There are probably not enough buyers of top end binoculars in x50 to merit competing head on with the NL x52s, which are formidable. Sliding in at the level a bit below (in cost and size/weight, too) lets you target buyers who might be balking at the...

    Habicht for birdwatching?

Areas like that can quite have a surprising amount of wildlife though, especially birds. It's fascinating how some (though unfortunately not all) birds can tolerate and indeed thrive in heavily human-modified habitats. I've seen redtails and Cooper's (the latter only very briefly) on visits...

    Choosing a 7x42 between UVHD+ and EDG

I have nothing to offer re 7x42 EDG vs UVHD, but some interesting points came up that I couldn't resist commenting on... AFOV vs TFOV vs exit pupil vs "immersiveness" - IMO there is a relationship between all these things, but I find it difficult to nail it down precisely. In my own experience...

    Nikon se 10x42

Whatever you fancy bringing, but I suppose the 10x50 and/or 12x50 would interest me the most. Also need to visit a mate in Staines at some point - how easily reachable are you from there?

Zeiss FL issue...and are they still repairable?

Such are the perils of the secondhand market. Caveat emptor. They'll probably be good for a long while once they're back to you, though.

Man destroyed Peregrine eggs on St Albans Cathedral roof

I'm all for Sharia punishments in cases like this. Dreadfully hard to climb up to those sorts of places without hands...

Leitz Trinovid 10x40 : No markings?

Maybe their previous owners requested they be removed to add to the mysterious aura of the LEICAMAN? The LEICAMAN needs not worry about piffling considerations like magnification, objective lens diameter or field of view. He just puts the beautifully built and packaged binocular to his eyes...

What do you think is the most difficult bird to see in the world?

Even the name sounds pretty daunting! There must be at least a couple of endemics in the Andamans/Nicobars that must be both skulking and require dodging infamously hostile tribesmen?

    My first alpha binoculars

If the primary purpose is hunting you may have some requirements specific to that activity - performance in low light seems to be highly valued, some seem to prefer colour rendition that makes brown stand out from green, etc. Waterproofng and ruggedness will probably also become more important...

Sticky rubber on numerous consumer products, not aimed at specific birding optics companies

yes, it does seem anathema in the "right" circles, doesn't it? (I do mean right)... ...and if folks feel poorer, that'll reduce unnecessary consumption. Maybe there is something to be thankful to the current inmate of the White House for, after all...

Hell yeah - I love threads like this! If NL secondhand prices could just go down a couple hundred bucks more... :giggle:

    Choosing a 7x42 between UVHD+ and EDG

I think a 10x52 NL, and 8x30 Binuxit would be a brilliant ménage a trois. Karlie Kloss and Marlene Dietrich!

Two Mechanisms of Vision: Ambient Vision and Focal Vision

Old hat it may be (but new to me - first time I'd read it) but still pretty interesting! Fortunately in most cases there are other things to go on besides size, or should I say the impression of size. I get to see the pairs of peregrines nesting near me quite regularly and have gotten...

    My first alpha binoculars

Fortunately, sample variation should be quite small at that price point. But if you are really good friends with your dealer, you might be able to persuade him to open up four or five boxes to let you choose the one you like best (good luck!)... In general when trying a binocular I look to...

Sticky rubber on numerous consumer products, not aimed at specific birding optics companies

Technological progress has been going on since Cro-Magnon man went from the sharpened stick to the bone and then flint spear point. No doubt there were those older cavemen who moaned that flint spearpoints broke too easily... Nowadays you can choose which era of binocular development you wish...

    Nikon se 10x42

Funny eh? In general, when I've compared 8x and 10x of the same model, higher mag seems to be more demanding - so am not totally surprised you found the 8x32 SE better than the 10x42. But the Habicht 8x30 and 10x40 share the same eyepiece, and we both think the latter is better; I wonder why...

    Nikon se 10x42

It's certainly interesting, but there's probably enough individual variation between users that (as with so many things optics related) what works for one may not for another. For instance I've always thought roofs handled better than porros unless the latter were small (eg. 8x30). The further...

Sticky rubber on numerous consumer products, not aimed at specific birding optics companies

No one is compelling you to spend your hard earned on NLs or other Swarovski binoculars. There are plenty of 50 year old binoculars out there, some of which can be obtained pretty cheaply, if you want to make an anti-environmentalist statement. Although if you want the ones with swastikas on...

Meopta 12x50 MeoStar B1 Plus HD

I would hesitate to describe the bag now supplied with the EL/NL as "useless". It may not be as stylish as the former Fieldbag (which you can purchase separately) but it's not too different from the "shaving bags" that came with the old SLCs (and I think Habichts as well?) and indeed similar...

    Nikon se 10x42

Having tried my 10x42 side by side with the NL etc at the last Birdfair, I wish I could agree with you there, but alas, fine binocular though it is, today's top alphas leave it behind in FOV and I thought they were slightly ahead in perceived sharpness too. Colour rendition is also more vivid -...
