    Bird from Sardinia

Not so sure. The plumage is very worn, however the black and white pattern on the primary edge and the lack of white edges to a short tail suggest Woodlark.

Grey throated martin? March26. SE of Iran

No idea how you would separate obsoleta rock martin (pale crag Martin) from Grey-throated based upon these photos.

    Warblers - Samarkand, Uzbekistan

There are 2 different (sub)species of LW in Uzbekistan. The mountain breeding althaea, and the lowland breeding halimodendri. They are separable in the field, albeit tricky, and both are present around Samarkand. I wouldn't be surprised if this accounts for the differences you have seen.

Korhaan in the Kalahari - help needed

The back is heavily marked with white chevrons in the OP. I had always believed this was a feature of Red-crested.

    Uzbekistan raptors & warbler

Happy to have a go at BOC in these circumstances, but as with the Chiffchaff sometimes you need better images. The Harriers are a good example, I can count number of primaries here, for example probably wouldn't be able to tell Monty's from Pallif

    Raptor and corvid, Uzbekistan

You may like to look back on an earlier of my threads re Uzbekistan " Chiffchaff sp - Kyzylkum desert, Uzbekistan 30 May 22" hopefully the link works

    Raptor and corvid, Uzbekistan

Rook is a relatively plentiful species along the river valley agricultural areas in Uzbekistan. I too suspect it is a Rook

    Raptor and corvid, Uzbekistan

I know from personal experience that some of the Chiffchaffs in Uzbekistan are very confusing and have considered a wide range of species/subspecies to find a match. I have even had local guides shrug their shoulders and say 'had them before & dont know'. Certainly I can advise to get as may...

Atlas Wheatear - Oenanthe seebohmi ?

The video is enlightening. I have never seen either Maghreb or Atlas tail-dipping like this bird. I have also just about managed to free frame the video on the open wing. It appears black, both on upper side and underside. If correct (I am only doing it on a smart phone) this rules out Atlas...

Atlas Wheatear - Oenanthe seebohmi ?

It is perhaps interesting that Collins 3rd edition concentrates on the separation of Maghreb from Finsch's. Normally their ranges don't meet. Perhaps this is the one occasion it is of use

Atlas Wheatear - Oenanthe seebohmi ?

Handbook of the Birds of the Western Palearctic (2 volume passerines book by Shirahai etc) describes it fully

Atlas Wheatear - Oenanthe seebohmi ?

Superficially I does look like O. seebohmi, but there are a number of points that don't ring true to me. I have never seen one with grey lores. The back is a bit dark. The wings don't seem long enough - normally the tips reach the inner edge of the black terminal bar on the tail,. The...

Desert Lark, Oman, end of February 2024

I agree with you ID. Desert Lark tend to reflect the colouration of the rocks in their home range. They are therefore extremely variable both locally and across the whole of the species range.

    Diver ID please?

Android has a split screen function (and has for many years - 10+ at a guess) I have never used as I find it annoying - but it is there. Both screens can be zoomed independently if you wish (I never have had the wish) But we are digressing from Divers

    Diver ID please?

I agree. The compare function is alive and well and sitting on Collins for Android. You can select up to 6 species to compare images side by side. It is on the left hand 'burger' index and simply select 'compare'. Not sure how the certainty of statements saying it can't be done have entered...

Morocco again! Guelmim, Agadir and Oukaimeden

In general the whole country is in the sixth year of drought. Dayet Srij has been dry since spring 2020, when it was only a few puddles anyway. No other lakes have any water. There was no rain this winter only odd showers. The Halfa has degraded to the point that it is no longer binding sand...

    Southern Kruger, South Africa

Agree. Immature without the red eye so typical of the adults. The tail is too long for Brubru, and lacks the compact impression of that species. My only issue is that I would have expected white outer tail feathers

Morocco again! Guelmim, Agadir and Oukaimeden

Hopefully the pages from my guidebook that Ashley photo'ed at Souss Estuary were some use for your day around Massa

Morocco again! Guelmim, Agadir and Oukaimeden

I have found both without a guide in the past, but the Sparrow is being out competed by House Sparrow and is in low numbers, mostly around certain small holdings that need permission to enter. Desert Warbler is suffering from the on going drought (6 years in & counting) which has all but...

Morocco again! Guelmim, Agadir and Oukaimeden

I have looked at the eBird report and put a qualified yes, but will offer my own thoughts. Tchagra territories are all along the river from Ifantar to the sea. They were certainly present last weekend before this crew went on 2nd. But they weren't particularly responsive for us. From previous...

Finsch's vs Variable Wheatear - Uzbekistan?

All I can contribute is that I have seen Finsch's looking just like this in Uzbekistan but I have never seen Variable there. The only Variables I have seen are nothing like as pale, but as they were not capistrata perhaps not surprising.

    Wheatear from UAE

I have just double checked the UAE species list. Only 2 records of Kurdish to date (it is kept up to date so will be to Jan 24). Persian is a regarded as a common winter visitor. Certainly I saw them regularly when I used to live there.

    Best Bird App for Indonesia?

I haven't tried it specifically, but have you looked at the Indonesia bird pack Merlin. I recently took both the bird book & Merlin to Mexico and the bird book stayed in the suitcase throughout. I was scrolling through the coverage and started to think if this is the beginning of the end of...

    Larus gull, Israel

Interesting. From location and timing, I would have immediately gone for Armenian Gull and not given it a second look. Be interested in your reasoning. I am not sure I have heard much on the status of Steppe Gull in Israel either on Med or Red Sea

Which Gulls? Iran, Hormozgan, Feb. 2023

Based on location, the default species should be Steppe. Confusingly enough, Steppe is a part of the Lesser Black backed complex even though it looks like one of Herring/Caspian super species. Without a flight shot, I would struggle to separate Caspian from Steppe, although I find it...
