    One quick way from this pic is the amount of black on the bill tip, the nail. Scaup has very small amount much smaller than this (although it can be variable!). Also there is quite a lot of contrast between mantle and flank colour, G. Scaup there is usually much less contrast.

    Glad someone has confirmed Greater Kestrel as that was exactly what I thought, but couldn't reconcile it being in Japan! so I didn't comment.

    For me it's the head shape and relative position of the eye in the head, which always seems more closer to the top of the head in greater than lesser. I was also going on the cleaner sides, although I do admit the exposure makes this difficult. I'm sure someone will come along and disagree with...

    Only if it lifts its wing I think. Hudsonian has dark underwing, Eurasian white(ish).
