    Zimbabwe Photos/ID Help

These photos were taken near Victoria Falls in July. Hoping some of you might be able to help with ID. The first...not sure where to start. The second, I think probably Lesser Masked Weaver. The third, I think Village Weaver because of red eye. The fourth, not sure where to start. I'd be...

Bird ID - Carara National Park Costa Rica - March 2023

I took this photo at Carara in March. I know, not a great photo but hoping some of you might be able to help with ID. Although the crown isn't visible and the face is partly obscured, I'm wondering if this might be a Golden-crowned Spadebill. The back color, bill, big eye, and short tail look...

Humebo Lodge Peru - July 2022 - Hummingbird ID

Still working through photos from this year and re-identifying species I photographed in Peru. The attached photos show two species. I believe the one on the left is a Lesser Violetear (distinct from Mexican/Green in eBird FWIW (but open to being corrected). The bird on the right is confusing...

Finches (Medium and Small Ground?) - San Cristobol Island Galapagos - Jan 2021

Hello all, I'm finally getting around to working through photos from the past year and am hoping for feedback on a few Galapagos finches. These photos were all taken on San Cristobol on Jan 31, 2021. After comparing these photos to many on eBird I'm...cautiously optimistic that I have the...

Kingfisher - Amazon Near Iquitos, Peru

These are photos I took near Iquitos, Peru in March 2020. I tagged as Amazon based on size/bill but wanted to get other opinions. I didn't do much to the images in Lightroom but the blueish color seems a bit off. Any feedback? Thx.

    Motmot - Chichen-Itza, Mexico - January 2019

This is an old/bad photo I found and never definitively ID'd. Tail isn't clear but overall lack of contract in plumage points to Lesson's vs. Turquoise-browed, the other likely Motmot at that location. Any feedback appreciated.

Help with ID - Belize Pewee (?)

I photographed this bird in Belize last week. It wasn't vocalizing. My initial thought was Tropical Pewee but the wing length made me think it could be Eastern Wood-pewee. Any thoughts?

    Female grouse/ptarmigan AK

Thx. The photos I’ve seen of spruce grouse chicks seem very very similar to ptarmigan so probably not much help. I’ve assumed Spruce but interesting how many adult female photos on eBird look very similar to Willow ptarmigan...

    Female grouse/ptarmigan AK

I photographed this female with chicks in Wrangell-St Elias National Park in Alaska in June. I didn’t see tail and am twisting myself in knots over ID because not super familiar with species. Strong barring underneath seems right for Spruce grouse but bill maybe not right? Please advise.

Chobe NP, Botswana - Cape or Greater Blue-eared Starling?

Thanks. See recent posting with comparison Thanks for the feedback. If you have time, please check out a posting I made today that compares this bird with another that shows odd plumage, possibly in molt. Would appreciate any information you can share. Cheers, Mason

Odd molting starling (?) Chobe NP, Botswana July

I photographed these birds in Chobe National Park in July within minutes of each other. The ID is probably easy for people more familiar with the birds of Botswana but I've tied myself in knots over this. The evenly colored bird is probably a Greater Blue-eared Starling because of the clear...

Sunbird, Sun Phak Wan paddies, Chaing May, Thailand November

This sunbird confuses me because of the patchy coloration. Mixed yellow and black underneath, dark black/purple on throat, greenish purple on side of neck... I'm guessing this is a bird in molt. Purple Sunbird? Would appreciate any input/feedback. Thanks, Mason Seattle

Chobe National Park, Botswana - July - Ashy Flycatcher?

I photographed this bird at the Chobe Game Lodge in July. Not a great angle to see the eye line but based on what I can see and the shape/color this looks like an Ashy Flycatcher. Would appreciate feedback/input if I'm offbase. Thanks, Mason Seattle

Zambezi National Park, Zimbabwe - Stocky Raptor

Zambezi National Park, Zimbabwe - Banded Snake Eagle? Hello, I photographed this bird in Zimbabwe in July. According to my notes, my guide identified this as a Banded Snake-eagle. Based on my books and photos I've seen online the ID appears to be good but given the incredible number of...

Zimbabwe near Victoria Falls in July

Lesser Masked Weaver leg color vs. Southern Thanks for the suggestion re: Lesser Masked Weaver. I did some searching and found some decent photos of females to compare. The leg color might be a decent reason to support Lesser although color varies a lot depending on lighting. The photos I found...

Chobe NP, Botswana - July - Brown Snake Eagle?

The numbers/variety of raptors in Africa confounds. I have dozens of bad photos of raptors that I'm digging through (don't worry, I won't post all of them...). This one seems to be one that may be identifiable despite the significant cropping/blurriness. Based on what I've seen in books and...

Chobe NP, Botswana - July - Plain brown sparrow - Petronia?

I shot these photos near Ihaha Campsite on the Chobe River. Very non-descript but supercillium and white on wing makes me think it could be a Yellow-throated Petronia that isn't showing the yellow on the throat. Would appreciate any input/feedback?

Chobe NP, Botswana - Cape or Greater Blue-eared Starling?

The starlings continue to confuse me. My inclination was that this is a Cape Starling because of eye color, greenish-blue plumage and lack of apparent purple on the "thighs" but when I compare to photos on hbw.com and elsewhere they all start to look the same. Would appreciate...

Chobe NP, Botswana, July - Tropical and/or Swamp Boubou?

I shot both of these photos within a few minutes of each but, according to my camera GPS, about 20 yards apart. So...could be the same or different birds. One photo seems to show a light pinkish tint to the sides which would suggest Tropical Boubou. The other doesn't show any of that tint which...

Chobe National Park, Botswana - July

This one is a complete mystery to me. I don't have a clear recollection of size and the angle is a bit odd to get a sense of shape but perhaps it's obvious to someone more familiar with birds of Botswana. The habitat was a dry/scrubby location about 200 meters from Chobe River. Would...

Holub's Golden Weaver? Chobe National Park, Botswana July

And one more from Chobe (for now...don't want to wear out my welcome). This bird is very bright yellow underneath and a bit olive above with a pale eye. Large bill seems to take female Spectacled Weaver out of consideration. Hint of reddish color on throat makes me think it could be Holub's...

Chobe National Park, Botswana July - Sparrow weaver?

And another photo from Chobe taken in July. The angle is a bit off so hard to get a good sense of shape or bill color but the distinct black crown/white eye stripe should make this easy...right? I found photos online of White-browed Sparrow Weaver that are reminiscent of this bird. Would...
