    Apparently another bird (crested auklets) in the same family was known to also have glowing beaks but Puffins is a new discovery...

    He happened to have a Puffin carcass laying around his lab, and he happens to shine a UV light onto it, and accidentally discovers that the beak glows. LOL. He's not sure why it glows, only speculating it may have been used to attract a mate. Article here: Puffin beaks are fluorescent

    Really impressive... Crow the Ultimate Problem Solver BBC Science VIDEO -- this crow figure out how to get a treat by successively using one to tool to get a second tool etc in order to get a treat in the last box. My neighbor hates crows and magpies and does everything he can to shoo them...

    Flicker is at it again...

    We get one every spring. I'm just hoping there's no damage to the cap. These guys are really good at making holes. And the sound at 5-6AM in the morning is not quite the alarm clock I'd like to wake up to...haha... It sounds pretty much like this... Extremely loud Flicker drumming at 6am...

    Flicker is at it again...

    Well, that northern flicker is calling his mate again. It would sure be nice if he didn't use our chimney though... Every single morning, he drops by and bangs on the chimney cap. (Similar to this guy in this online pic)
