Heavily marked Herring | Choshi, jp | march 2020

It looks a fairly standard vegae, they do come even more heavily marked and the dark eye alone is a good indicator. So it's Vega Gull if you follow the IOC.

    Warbler Central Japan 22May

Hi Mac, The early dates suggest 'local' breeders, either Jp Leaf or Easter Crowned but it's difficult to be sure from the images. I'm surprised you don't see Eastern Crowned on your patch in spring if it's suitable for Narcissus Fly, as you mentioned earlier. I don't see Jp Leaf in Kyoto city...

    Warbler Central Japan 22May

Hi Mac, I just came across this thread and rather than contact you directly I thought it better to reply here as others may be interested too. The consensus is correct, these birds are Kamchatka Leaf Warblers and they are particularly common passing through this part of Japan right now. I saw...

    (Common) Gull, Nara Japan

Because juv heinei appear to moult much earlier than kamtschatschensis and seem to have some consistently different features in 1stw it's possible to pick out a very small number in Osaka in early winter. Other ages are too difficult to identify with certainty because of the huge range of...

    Extra Birds from Japan

Hi Mac, I agree, it isn't possible to be 100% sure with a single poor quality shot, and the wing shape could be an artifact of the image. I've only seen one MHE in Hokkaido and it would be odd to see two in a short trip if in different places but how often does that happen? Every birder has a...

    Extra Birds from Japan

Hi Alex, I suspect this is a MHE, my only worry is whether they wander as far as the Kushiro area in winter. My feeling is the tail is too long and rounded for the sea eagles but ok for MHE. At the right distance all you'd see of the tail barring is the thicker sub-terminal band as seems to be...

    White Wagtails Central Japan

Hi Mac, The first two shots may be of lugens x leucopsis hybrids which do occur in the area. Baicalensis would have a pale grey mantle more like ocularis. The strongly yellow face is said to be a feature of juveniles but I do see the odd fresh-plumaged adult that has a yellow face too, though...

Canvasback or just a Pochard Central Japan

Hi Mac, It would be great to have a Canvasback in this part of Japan but I think this is just a Pochard. Canvasback has a really long long bill with a straighter culmen (concave in Pochard like this bird) and the back would probably look much paler. If the bird hadn't been a loner you'd have...

    Caspian Gull in Japan?

Hi Jan, Thanks for commenting. I didn't think it was a typical Caspian really but needed advice not having seen any and being unaware how much variation is possible. The moult timing is quite exceptional I think, probably there months ahead of typical birds which is a long time at that (any)...

Assorted Birds from Japan - Tokyo and Hokkaido

The first birds look like Japanese (Temminck's) Cormorant. The second is definitely Brown-headed, red underparts. The third shows two Vega. I might suggest Mountain Hawk Eagle for the fourth going by wing shape. Neil Davidson

    Caspian Gull in Japan?

The OSJ place Mongolian within Caspian thus Caspian is considered a regular winter visitor, however cachinnans still isn't listed in the most recent Japanese Check-List despite a number of claims over the years. Last weekend I had a gull that strongly suggested cachinnans which would therefore...

    Which tattler, Japan?

Thanks for that link, I didn't think there were going to be any responses and perhaps there is less in the literature than I'd hoped for. I had already checked that link and also Robert Inglis' photo guide here http://www.photos-n-guides.com/html/wandering_tattler.html which suggests the...

    Which tattler, Japan?

The last time I was out looking for migrant waders I saw one tattler (out of 1000+ Grey-tailed) which caught my attention. However there weren't any features that I considered might not also be shown by Grey-tailed so I left it. Checking the images later I found it had reticulated rear tarsai...

    Kyoto birding?

Hi, The Imp Pal Park has Jp Pygmy Woodpecker and breeding Brown Hawk Owls (usually 2-3 pairs), try the north east corner while you'll find an area of roped-off nest boxes. It might be worth heading to the Katsura River in the west of the city for Long-billed Plover (there may be post-breeding...

    Carrion or Large-billed Crow? Okinawa

Deep, blunt-tipped bill, steep forehead, tail shape... Large-billed. The birds down there are smaller and Carrion is very rare. Neil Davidson
