    How's Your 2023 List Going?

A week in Dorset to finish the year provided four final ticks, including one lifer. Perhaps if the weather had been better I might have found more and though it's kind of a shame not to make 500, it's still a lot more than I thought I'd get this year. 489. Slavonian Grebe 490. Common Goldeneye...

    How are Athlon Midas 8 x 42 ED & Midas G2 8 x 42 UHD?

I've read in a couple of places, including from one retailer, that the glass in the Midas ED and G2 are the same and actually only the body is upgraded.

    How's Your 2023 List Going?

This would have been easy to tick off when I'm in England next month, but much nicer to get it here in Madrid where it's uncommon (unless you count the escaped that's been living in the city centre for a couple of years!). 487. Eurasian Wigeon

Poll - Do you agree or disagree with the AOS's recent decision to abandon the use of eponymous bird names?

I'm not sure if you mean as default, but Merlin bird packs do use scientific names alongside vernacular names if you switch it on in settings.

    Storm-petrel ID, San Diego

I lightened up the photo and removed the automatic settings in the raw file which I think helps to view some details clearer. Even after brightening, the carpal bar on the upper side of its left wing is still barely visible and (hopefully I'm not on my own with this one!) is that not a wedge...

    Storm-petrel ID, San Diego

That may be the most likely candidate as there were a good number of them out that day. But that may also be the reason I can't remember the flight style of this particular bird (not aided by the fact whale watching boats obviously don't slow down for birds). I wondered if, based on this photo...

    Storm-petrel ID, San Diego

Apologies for blurry picture, but I wondered what people make of this storm-petrel because I’m not sure. From a whale watcher off San Diego yesterday.

    How's Your 2023 List Going?

Tahoe. I'm usually based in San Diego whenever I'm over here but left for a week or two at the exact wrong time (from a birding perspective!). I understand some interesting things did turn up, but predictably gone before I got back. Having said that, there are still very big numbers of seabirds...

Vocal ID - San Diego, California

I heard this by the Bird & Butterfly Garden in Tijuana River Valley yesterday. I'm stumped by it, which is unsurprising given my limited experience of American species. But what surprises me is Merlin and BirdNET are also stumped (the recording seems clean and clear enough). The recording is...

    How's Your 2023 List Going?
