Finches just stare at the feeder

I’ve not seen finches in the garden for a few years. We get a lot of blue, great, and long-tail tits, robins, starlings, magpie, wood pigeon, ring/collar dove, house sparrows, and dunnock, but the finches seem to have abandoned us. From time to time see goldfinch in the trees near the feeders...

    LUMIX fz2000 for digiscoping

The lens on the FZ2000 doesn't retract or expand. It expands when turned on and then anything else happens by internally movement of the element. The length of the lens remains the same no matter what focal length of the zoom you use. With that said I've not done any digiscoping.

    May Moths 2023

Still only getting singles at most trebles if I count those around the trap in the mornimg. Surprised to find a Poplar Hawk Moth in there this morning. Along with something else that was large on the same egg box. Removed the PHM and set aside the egg box as the other thing was pretty dormant...

    May Moths 2023

Same here temp dropped quite early. Noticed a Brimstone and Buff Ermine outside the box and a couple of LBAM before going to bed. This morning the box had three Muslin on the outside. A Shuttle-shaped Dart, Treble Lines and what I think is a Vine’s Rustic inside.

    May Moths 2023

What confused me is that the upper bar is convex whilst it appears convex in the book, then I looked at my old images and they are all convex too. So Seraphim it is.

    May Moths 2023

It was around 8 degrees here last night. Not much in the trap except unident pugs. There was a White Ermine inside, and something which is probably a Seraphim but not sure. Outside the trap I found a Buff Ermine at the foot of a garden ornament.

Agree it does look like a Seraphim. Had a few of them the last week.

    Shieldbugs.

My first port of call for UK hets is British Bugs Home - An online identification guide to UK Hemiptera by Tristan Bantock & Joseph Botting who were both at the NHM at the time it was started. For European bugs I favour Heteroptera - Bug Photo Gallery - Foto Galerie Wanzen. General internet...

    Scoparia sp

Well I think it is Scoparia. Its about 12mm in size so vased on size and fs I'm favouring Scoparia subfusca but could equally be Scoparia ambigualis.

    May Moths 2023

Low numbers here last night too. Except for half a dozen pugs (which I can't id), and 3 cockchafers, there were 2 Treble Lines, a Pale Prominent, and a female Muslin. Not been much better the previous day with the obligatory 'chafers there was a Garden Pebble, female Muslin, 3 Brimstone, number...

El Cheapo here, what do you think of my plans?

The FZ200 has F2.8 throughout its zoom range. If you really need extra zoom then a TCON17 takes my 640mm FZ200 to 1000mm. Wife has a FZ72 which is 20mm-1200mm put the TCON on and you're at 2000mm (needs special handling though). It's not going to match a Nikon lens but then a Nikon 200-400mm is...

El Cheapo here, what do you think of my plans?

I've used Pansonic FZ series bridge cameras since 2006. First one was an FZ30 then since laterly a FZ200. I will probably replace it with an FZ2000 sometime this year. For birds I found that the FZ was a bit slow at focussing when trying to photograph birds flitting to and fro on feeders. OTOH I...

    Copy Writing Shots?

The thing you have to accept is that anything you post online will be misused in some way. As such if the thing you post matters to you then don't post it on the web. As for photos I've seen images taken from Flickr and sold as print. National newspapers have taken them to illustrate their...
